"happy immunity" , oil on canvas
"symptoms" , gouache, watercolour, posca on canvas
For the duration of my Unit 3 folio my focus was on “Stories and Tales” and how in which these are presented, told, mean and affect us as humans. My first final “Happy Immunity” which displays the popular concept of chicken pox parties, something family members recall and attend. This story about allowing children to interact with an infectious child is an unorthodox concept that would clash with today's problems like COVID.
My second final “symptoms” is a series of three skinny canvases each representing a symptom that encompases my disorder: mania (red), depression (blue), psychosis (green).
The “Symptoms” presentation of the monochromatic canvases matches to tie into the second finals children one blue, one green and one red. the order in left to right going red, blue, green. In “symptoms” there are minor details that equivalate to my experience and coping. The silver eyes in the background can be interpreted in two ways, the amount of people who experience what I do and a sense of not being alone. Additionally it's also interpreted as when facing a disorder you feel as if everyones watching you, especially when facing it alone.
“Happy Immunity” shows the twisted grotesque nature of intentional exposure to viruses, despite at their time chicken pox parties being a way to obtain immunity without a vaccine very few would still practise this as a way of protesting against vaccines. The middle girl in the painting represents the main infectious person knowing what is occurring to the people around them. The red and green children show sickly symptoms of suffering displaying instant response to the blue childs disease.
