Identity Series, 35mm Black and White Film Negative Scans
My theme 'Identity' explores the way people express themselves. This series I created was focused on how objects and locations can convey a story. Items and areas around my grandparent’s home in Lake Tyers were my main subjects. The theme of 'identity' investigates how people portray or think of themselves by the items around them and what may have influenced who they are today. I have an interest in expressing myself and although the series is a lot smaller than I anticipated, my theme 'identity' will work be presented by revealing the environment I was raised in. I want to explore how I can express these traits in myself as an artist, by experimenting and trialling with my photographs.
Social Connection Series, Polaroid photographs, scanned
My potential direction 'Social Connection' drove the way I envisioned my final artwork, which displays how I preserved my social connections during Victoria's lockdown. This series of photographs I created was focused on how objects can convey a particular story to the viewer. Items from my bedroom or garden were my main subjects throughout the series. The theme of 'social connection' investigates how items or beings in my life allowed me to stay socially active, engaged and connected during the period of isloation. I have an interest in documenting elements of life, especially my own during such a unique period. This allowed my theme 'social connection' to be presented through the personal portayal of limited interaction. Later, I want to explore how I can portay these traits for other people as an artist, by experimenting and trialing new subject matter, possibly using another medium.
I want to portray the different ways people can feel connected and how people might see or interpret a connection. When I will be using a muse, I want to represent a connection for the individual. Their feelings towards connection will probably not be the same to another person. I hope that my final pieces will almost be an invitation to the audience to learn about the muse and what I am curious to create and present related to the theme connection.
I have generated ideas relating to concepts such as emotional, physical and imaginative connections, and may explore more. A few key concepts I am choosing to look at in-depth include social connections, connections with objects and connects with the environment. With these conceptual possibilities, portraits and landscapes come to mind. In my initial brainstorm, I conjured questions surrounding each possible sub-theme, and this will help me create various ideas of how and what I want to shoot. This will open up more possibilities and as the year goes on, and throughout my studio process and research, I may discover more questions or creative problems.
