Liminal State of Mind, Charcoal on paper
Unapologetic Self, Charcoal on paper and acrylic paint on plastic sheet
'Liminal State of Mind'
Within my final artwork I have delved into the concept of internal conflict under my theme of ‘Competition’. The inclusion of two subjects is to convey the mental ‘voices’ which impact our decision making. Such inner confliction and competition of thoughts flow within one another, which I’ve displayed through the curved canvases moulding between each other. A notion of the necessity of such decision making despite the doubts that arise. However, the emotive response of both subjects differs so to present the juxtaposition of internal thought patterns. I was able to convey such intense emotions through the medium of charcoal where I could effectively present a strong level of contrast.
'Unapologetic Self'
My second artwork, entitled ‘Unapologetic Self’, relates to the struggles of adhering to the constraints of expectations. Specifically the intricacy of such moulds that we are conditioned to conform to. The focus being how we handle the multitude of expectations we're confronted with. My subject is looking upwards towards a ‘cloud’ of swirling expectations that she is constantly facing. Instead of expressing resentment and anger towards the harshness of such expectations, she has come to terms with their invasive nature. She considers who she is expected to be but maintains her identity when she is faced with them.
