TinkerCad:
Multiday Task
Multiday Task
Today, start on either creating a chess set, or a cityscape. The idea of the cityscape is related to creating a kaiju (like Godzilla or King Kong).
Before beginning, let's look a bit at how chess sets are made in relation to CNC machines.
Before beginning, let's look a bit at how city scapes have been artificially and digitally created for movies and cinema.
To begin, the first logical step is to create the chess board.
From the same YouTuber, how to create a Pawn. You are welcome to fins tutorials or resources from other places too. I'll share a few here and there. Yours shouldn't look exactly the same, feel free to adjust it a bit and make your own version.
The next piece he creates is the rook.
Again, yours shouldn't look exactly the same, feel free to adjust it a bit and make your own version.
Again, yours shouldn't look exactly the same, feel free to adjust it a bit and make your own version.
As you work on designing your own set with your own custom pieces, check out some of the custom shapes shown in this video.
There are some example videos out there, showing you example cities people made, and a few videos that have no voice over, just where you watch them build, but very few real tutorials for this that I could find.
However, you did learn how to create a house and/or building yesterday. So you could use some of these same concepts to build a little town or city this way. You could start with what you created yesterday, and make copies of it, and then modify those copies to look different. Maybe make a few other simple buildings for a bit more variety.
This video starts with making the ground and a simplified car. You can follow along, or skip around. If you follow along, keep in mind your goal is to create your own, not make a copy. You can use some of the techniques he uses, but don't just copy.
From the same YouTuber, here he creates a few simple buildings. These are not as complex as the one yesterday; keep in mind you're trying to create a cityscape, so you don't have much time for each building.
In the next video, he creates a basic layout. There are a few instances where it would have been beneficial to use the group feature and the lock feature... but you still get the general idea.
So this multiday task was inspired by one of your classmates creating Hello Kitty. That probably sounds ridiculous. Hello Kitty looked really big on the screen, and that reminded me of giant monster / kaiju movie scenes like Godzilla, King Kong, or Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man. I could imagine a little city below, with Hello Kitty causing chaos.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot of making-of features about how they create these. In many of the oldest and original videos, especially of the other Gozilla films, they had actors in monster suits, with a model of the city that they'd tear through. I was able to find a video from 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters talking about how they created Mothra.
I did find more videos about creating monsters in TinkerCad than creating cities, but mostly either silent, or not in english... or not very good. Anyway, you can create your own monster, or find videos on your own. I did find a video on creating ghosts that I'll share with you later, so you could make a giant ghost, or a haunted city instead if you choose.
Have you looked into any chess variants before? They're basically different version of the game. Some of these are based on the historical lineage of games that led to chess, some are based on different regions, and some are just modifications of the game.
The first variant I saw was when I was still a student. It was a custom piece that was added to the game, called the wizard. There are variants of the wizard out there now, but I can't find the exact one I first saw. I don't remember what it did, but it was located in an extra square that was added to each corner of the board.
There's also some chess variants you can play online, and they don't all involve new pieces, some of them involve different rules. Have you heard of Fog of War/Dark Chess?
Some chess variants are a mix of these, a different board, different pieces, different rules. We can also see some of these through history.
Today, to finish our mini-project, spend some time deciding how to modify your chess set to be a chess variant. Modify both the board and have at least one new piece that would behave different.
Screenshot your modified board and the new piece or pieces, on your slide, explain how the changes work in the game.
In many Kaiju / Giant Monster movies, there's some sort of military force to try to defend the city. You might decide to add some tanks and jets to protect the city.
There are lots of videos of tanks, but not that many where they actually walk you through the process of creating it. Here's one, but you can look for others if you'd like.
There are lots of videos of planes with tutorials, but lots of them are quite a bit longer. Here's one, it's the shortest I found although its not super great, you can look for others if you'd like.
