We've been talking a bit about the IB Expo. At the IB Expo, you can see our upperclassmen discussing some of their projects. This is part of what sets IB apart from more regular schools. I'd like to talk with you a bit about that and a bit about why you should consider IB if you haven't decided already.
If you plan on attending a university or college in Texas, IB could be very beneficial to you.
In middle school/high school, you have a certain requirement to hit, and if you reach that requirement, you have an A, you get your diploma, etc. After high school, it often doesn't work that way. Universities only accept so many students, there isn't a specific requirement that magically means you'll get into any school- instead they are choosing which students look best to them. Employers are the same way; they are only going to choose whichever candidates look best to them.
Whatever you decide to do in the future, you want to think about how you're standing out against your peers.
We've also talked some about portfolios, and we'll continue to. Portfolios are how you can help demonstrate how you are different than your peers and why a school or company should choose you over someone else. No matter where you go to school next year, whether you're in IB or not, you should consider developing your portfolio.
MIT isn't the only school where you can submit a portfolio, there's also:
These are just the ones I found this morning. There's probably more out there. As also mentioned, there are other sorts university programs that also allow submitting a portfolio. Almost all the arts and design programs expect it (like Brown, Stanford, London, and Otis College) , but there are others too:
Rice (Click on the School of Architecture or Humanities link)
University of Washington (in Washington)
We'll talk more about portfolios later.
You have another Karel task today.
Go to: Stanford Karel >>
Watch the video below to see how to get to today's Karel task.
Once you're at the maze, write code for Karel to retrieve the beeper;
in other words:
first you need to have Karel move to the beeper,
then pick up the beeper,
lastly return to the starting position.
When you know this works, create a video recording of your program working successfully, and add this to your slide for today.
If you didn't finish the work from earlier in the week, use some of your time for that. If you're finished with everything, consider working on your portfolio some or playing more light-bot.
