Grub and Zeris get their next mission from the Garrison Commander Tellig Tulach: they are to convince three villages to resume paying their insurance taxes for the Howl’s protection, since the Walled City of Nuwel has given them confidence. Gareth has gone with the 29th Squad to follow their lead, and Colmar has been promoted. Grub and Zeris go to the Hawkfeather Flagon for information.
The two adventurers meet Carl, an old dwarf and a drunkard. He joins them for their quest. The three of them talk to Ronvik, a member of the 19th Ranging Squad who has news of a merchant from Nuwel, and a mysterious prophecy.
While travelling to the three villages and the city of Nuwel, the trio comes across the Sunday Knight, who is hunting a werewolf. She sends the group in as bait for it, and then pops out at the end to slay it. Unhappy with this, Grub leaves her tied up as punishment. The nearby village, Leshendale, is mysteriously deserted, and Grub sees through one of the trees that its villagers were pulled from their houses by some kind of strong wind.
Next, the group follows the wind to Danderhollow, where there are some druid outcasts with a mysterious ritual. The trio gets their promise of payments to the Howl, but things nearly heat up to the point of a fight when it is discovered that they were doing some kind of hybrid polymorphing with unwilling participants, even a goblin, who they are able to save.
The path leads on to Deepgarden Grove, where they find Golguse Hatrim, hiding in terror after witnessing the Gathering. Apparently, the druids of the wilderness offered up Lurisian soldiers to the Wilderman to stave off his wrath this year at the Gathering. Golguse is convinced by Zeris to join the Howl, and Grub convinces him not to give up being a druid.
Lastly, the group reaches Nuwel. They learn that the prophecy foretold adventurers coming in through Nuwel’s gates, followed by the city’s destruction. Zeris seeks for the diplomatic approach to entering the Temple of Corrus, while Grub and Carl break in with a rope made of laundry.
They confront the leader of Nuwel, a High Priest of Corrus who is adamant that their group will cause his city to be destroyed if he does not stop them. He is defeated by them, and Gareth runs in just after the fight is over and explains that the 29th Ranging Squad had followed the Wilderman’s trail there.
Outside the Temple, the four of them see a wild gust of wind pour in and drag the villagers away from their homes, changing their eyes to be white and their skin to look rotten, grey and brown. They don’t get a good look at the source, and the city is left abandoned. The Squad takes the forty to fifty survivors to the third garrison for refuge, and the group also finds the Sunday Knight and Golguse there.
Gareth informs them that he has a lead on the Wilderman’s strange powers, which lies in the Heibach Mire. He believes that he will find answers there.
