The "Draining" is a sacrificial ritual that drains the life energy of those offered. The Draining occurs only when the stars align in a specific way (usually every 4 to 7 years). Once in alignment, followers of Domecus will bring their eldest child to be drained.
Even though James was a young boy, he knew something sinister was going on at his church. He warned his older brother Jonathan, but he was ignored.
Jonathan had been offered by his parents and was about to be drained by Domecus when James freed him. Having no other option, James was offered for the Draining instead. However, something peculiar happened when James was Drained; he survived. It was a blessing never before bestowed by Domecus. James was declared the herald of Domecus.
As a full member of the Jointed Styx, James, now renamed Jinx, traverses the River's current, spreading the Light of Atarius.
Jinx laid in the loose shale. I guess I can’t win all of the time. Jinx thought. He waved his limp hand in front of him, and the corpse lying in the shallow water disappeared. Off into the distance Jinx could hear the footsteps dissipating. He struggled to his feet.
“Hopefully.” Jinx muttered, “I won’t run into anymore minotaurs.”
"James" was introduced after the members of the original crew were killed at the Monolith of Asili. Since then he has been the longest-running character in the series. He had been working alongside another informant and member of the Jointed Styx named Kraboonie while in the Third Garrison of the Howl. Tellig Tulach dispatched him on a mission along with the Sunday Knight and Leos Whitewind to find the missing members of the 29th Ranging Squad.
Jinx has since been slowly gaining allies and debtors as he continues onward toward his ultimate goals. He discovered the Wilderman's identity in the Heibach Mire and gave his group a huge advantage in the fight, which they ultimately lost. Afterwards, he was one of the original members of the Westward Fellowship formed by Tellig Tulach, along with Opus Magnus and Marvin Dulcimer. Together, they traveled to the Knights of Zorn in the Greth Mountains, and along the way added Astrik Tsosentrio and Virtue among their ranks. Jinx successfully converted Astrik over to the faith of Atarius, and gained him as an accomplice. He made it through the scrying test of the Chain of Zornacles monks in order to gain passage into their archives, without revealing any actual information about himself or Astrik. His Ring of Mind Shelding is his most valuable possession, as it allows for him to keep his many secrets regarding the Jointed Styx and his personal aspirations.
In the Crypt of Blackyon Roy, he controlled the mind of Colmar Cloudwing to give him the Onyx Blade, which he gained soon afterwards. Jinx and Astrik split from the Fellowship and smelted down the Onyx Blade into two daggers, each taking one and going their separate ways. Jinx infiltrated the city of Nuwel and convinced the Wilderman that he is loyal to him after ratting out the spies from his organization which are collecting information within the walls. He is currently on a mission with Opus Magnus and his current overseer Lucius Falco to replenish Nuwel's Veil of Shadows.
Later, it is revealed that his personal quest is to resurrect his brother Jonathan, who was a sacrifice to Domecus in the Draining, a ritual where villagers give up their firstborns' souls to Domecus, rendering them unable to have even a spiritual form. James killed Jonathan by his own hand before he could be offered up, and it is his quest to find a way to bring his soul out of limbo and into the material world so he can be reunited with his brother.
With the Onyx Dagger and the Gathering of the Four Divines, he attempted to achieve what the Oracle of Greth Summit said he could do to become a god, however his attempt was cut short by Nath, who did not grant him the ability to use the Dagger to kill one of his children. As such, Jinx believed that his entire life's goals had come to a devastating halt, until Domecus himself reached out to Jinx in secret and instructed him that he can bring back his brother if Jinx summons Nath into the material plane where he can be defeated once and for all...
