Carl is a two-hundred year old dwarf who used to work under the Foundation. He styles himself as "Dr" Carl von Fink, and is proud to carry on his family legacy of the Fink Technique, a style of combat which combines brute strength and magical reinforcement.
After the Foundation fell at the hands of Torin the Ripper, the Sisterhood of Ghosts and the True Foundation (all puppeteered by the followers of Domecus), he wandered the Wilderness and took up heavy drinking, masking the memories of the battles he commandeered in the Foundation's reckless last attempts to stay standing. Not only had he lost everything with its fall, he also engaged willingly in savage battles in which atrocities were committed in desperation. For years he worked as a Howl Ranger in the Third Garrison under Tellig Tulach, and eventually forgot all about his Foundation days.
Carl joined Zeris Vlanir and Grub Ghostgrave on a quest to motivate the "city" of Nuwel to re-accept the Howl's protection, not aware that due to the Tulach-Wilderman Pact, if they didn't accept they were fair game for the Wilderman. This quest culminated in the death of Nuwel's ealdorman/priest Imagnus the Omnipotent (who Carl delivered the finishing blow to), and the entirety of Nuwel being assimilated into the Wilderman's army of Dustwalkers.
Once the Third Garrison was overtaken by the Pluvians, his favourite tavern (the Hawkfeather Flagon) was repurposed into a ration house for the new influx of villagers the Pluvians were allowing behind the walls for the winter. As he had no reliable source of liquor anymore, he had to either leave the Howl or stay and get sober. He chose the latter, but was forced to face his suppressed memories as they all flooded back in. After this trauma, he eventually rediscovered his Headband of Intellect in Caloman var Pluvia's chambers, and remembered his von Fink technique. He joined the 29th Ranging Squad as they discovered the Wilderman's identity and fought him, being caught off guard when he learned that his drinking buddy Ronvik was the Wilderman all this time.
After this adventure, he decided to hang up his axe and start a tavern in Tulach's Getaway Village. This tavern was the meeting place where the Westward Fellowship was chosen, and it grew substantially in popularity later on when Leos Whitewind arrived to promote his new brand of ale. As funds were waning, Carl eventually took up a quest to retrieve a fellow villager's transgender son, taking him and Leos to the Green Highlands.
In the Green Highlands, Carl had to deal with a rambunctious child with too much power, and snapped, causing his adventuring party to take a plunge down an elevator shaft into the Underdark. However, they then discovered the Elder Brain and Carl played a major part in defeating it, freeing all of the hundreds (if not thousands) of commoners who were under the control of the Illithids for the purposes of the Lurisian Expansion.
After this final adventure, Carl retired for good at Tulachs village, returning with Leos and an Aboleth.
