Something great coming this month...Student Annotation tool. Read more about the next set of releases that will be available starting May 15.
Student Annotation Submissions:
Instructors can use an annotated assignment type to upload a file for students to annotate directly on using the DocViewer (same way teachers currently annotate on a student assignment in speedgrader).
When an instructor adds the assignment, it creates a version for each student, the student then annotates on their version and submits the assignment. They are graded in speedgrader with the ability to see the student's annotations.
Notes:
It also supports peer reviews (not anonymous peer reviews).
Student annotation assignments cannot be used for group assignments
Assignment enhancements are not available for annotation submissions
Students can complete this in the Canvas Student app in addition to the web-based Canvas course
If a student accesses a previously submitted attempt, the annotations are shown as read-only and additional annotations are not allowed
New Quizzes Save and Build Button
New quizzes will now have the option to Save or Build helping to separate the workflow.
When an instructor creates and enters details for a quiz, the page displays both a Save and a Build button. Previously the page only included the Save button, which counterintuitively launched the New Quiz editor.
The Save button saves the content in the existing page and returns the user to the area where the quiz was accessed. . This change to the Save button mimics similar behavior located throughout Canvas regarding saving page content.
The Build button saves the existing page and launches the New Quiz editor.
Auto-Show Closed Captioning
This is a USER choice feature that can enable captions to show by default for all Canvas videos.
Users can access the User Settings page to enable the Auto-Show Closed Captioning feature. This functionality is supported for captions added to recorded Canvas videos or uploaded videos in a course.
Captions can be added to a video when uploading a video, or they can be added any time by clicking the video in the Rich Content Editor and accessing the video options sidebar.
Note: Videos embedded from third-party tools, such as YouTube, are not supported. Additionally, videos embedded from Canvas Studio videos are not yet supported but will be in a future release.
Voting Up Features
Remind your staff that when features they would like are not seen in Canvas, they can add them to the Idea Exchange Conversations. Here is one that we are promoting! Please vote it up:
