Hi. My name is Joelle Nelson and I am your Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) building leader. The purpose of GLAD is to provide teachers with learning strategies to help ALL of your students excel. It uses clever visuals to teach your students and is extremely helpful for ELL students and struggling students.
Every month I will send out 4 new EASY instructional strategy that can be done remotely or in person. Every Monday throughout the month you will receive an email with more information and resources to support your use of the strategy in your unique teaching situation.
October's Strategy: Academic Social Skills T-Chart
Strategy-In-Brief
· Explicitly teaches how a social skill should look and sound in your classroom (virtual or not)
· Teacher provides the social skill (see a list of possible skills below or choose one your class would benefit from)
· Students brainstorm what an observer would SEE when a student was using that skill (teacher can guide and selectively add to the chart)
· Students brainstorm what an observer would HEAR when a student was using that skill (again teacher guides and selectively adds to the chart)
· Provide an opportunity to use social skill in an activity immediately and share observations afterwards about who used it and how (what you saw or heard). POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT!
Video
Click here (or on YouTube) to view an 7 min video on how to use the strategy and reinforce a specific social skill.
Pro-Tips
· Ask students to help you define the skill
· Use the student's language as much as possible
· Use quotes around phrases and sentences students could use
· Phrase in the positive
· You can cite some positive examples of students using the social skill and ask the students (maybe in the break out rooms) what examples they observed. (And you can add to the chart - more on this next week).
Self-Care for Teachers
· If this is a new strategy to you, try it out in an easy situation first
· Learning. Is. Messy. For you and for students! If something doesn't work the way you hoped or planned, remember to take a growth mindset. What did you learn?
