Thank you to everyone who came to our second Ed Tech Conference session! We talked about the current research on teens and social media.
We started off by looking at teens own perception of social media and how it makes them feel. It's really cool to see students' own thoughts on their use of social media. Check it out:
For this session, we were looking at the results of a survey taken by teenagers in 2018. There's a really cool infographic that breaks down some of the key findings. Also, check out what every minute of 2019 looks like on the internet:
Not all screen time is created equally. One of the issues with many internet/social media surveys is that all screen time is treated as the same. We looked at the difference between something that's creative and social versus something that's passive. Check it out:
Diving further into the results, we looked at the 9 Key Findings of the study. Social media usage has dramatically increased, but most teens think that it's something positive. We also see that teens think that they are receiving more personal connects even though face to face communication has decreased. While they do see down sides, teens also see the benefits.
Check out the full study here. Sarah and I put together a quick presentation that summarizes what we talked about today and gives us some resources to dive deeper!
See you on November 19 when Sarah Mattioli and Sam Rossi continue the conversation by talking about digital citizenship and how to talk to students about social media!
