use space
The first thing a student learns whilst being instructed in drawing is to use the visual space of their medium. At the start most students do little things, often starting in a corner. . . .
Where I live here in rainy England the spiders (et al) and I have a deal. An accord. The creepy crawlies can have the sides and corners of the cottage interior spaces and roam at will during lights out. Humans get the rest. Sadly, a big spider got accidentally squished a few days ago because it broke the contract. This is totally unheard of... ! Cannot help but think it was an omen. Had seen it doing its 'the world is my oyster' thing and made a mental note to watch out for it until it learned the ropes. It was destiny, I guess. Anyway, after a while the students, in their liberation from psychological restraints, go ape and their surfaces are a chaos of freedom. Then, this needs pulled back.
Soon enough, though, they all learn that space is to be used in the service of their art.

even the people
their faces
