Chiyo-ni
Bashō, Buson, Issa and Shiki command the heights of classical Japanese haiku (perhaps a triangular pyramid, with Bashō at apex). But, Chiyo-ni, as a woman haijin (haiku poet) easily holds her own against the men - including her school of haiku founder, Matsuo Bashō. So, let's give that pyramid a square base! [see: Big 5]
Chiyo-ni's most quoted haiku is probably :
morning glory!
the well bucket-entangled,
I ask for water
her second most popular? :
in what windy land
wanders now
my little dear
dragonfly hunter
I propose this as the third :
butterfly on a maidens path
now behind
now in front
And this for good luck :
quite a hundred gourds
sprouting from the fertile soul...
of a single vine
but . . .
