PROB 32/18/144 & 146 Petitions

Two petitions made by John Church a nephew of Samuel Cromleholme's sister Margarott between 1672 and 1692. One petition states that it is the third one made to date. They are all petitions made to a judge sitting in Doctor's Commons in London in an attempt to claim money left to his sister Mary Nicholson in Samuel's probate. His sister had gone to live in New England (North America) and had not been heard of since. The later petition states that she had been there some 13 years and still had not been found.

Doctors' Commons in London were also called the College of Civilians. Lawyers formed a society to practise civil law in London with their own buildings with a large library and rooms where they lived and worked.

The results of these petitions are not known but it would appear that they were unsuccessful as no mention of the claim against Mary Cromleholme's estate appears in her probate documents.

Both petitions were photographed by RC at National Archives at Kew, London and have been very kindly transcribed for me by Mrs Marjorie Pollard.
