Mitton

The old parish of Mitton extended on the north bank of the Ribble from Ribchester on the west up to Grindleton on the east. All Hallows Church (previously Church of St Michael) dates from C13th and contains the Shireburne of Stonyhurst tombs, it was the mother church of the area.

1567 - 27th February : Percival Speaker was instituted to Mitton. He may have been a crypto papist as he neglected to provide a list of recusants in 1592.  Note : There were no Crombleholme's in the recusant lists from 1604 to 1664. 1612 - Katherine (nee Tomilson) [Cro0069] baptised in Mitton daughter of Thurstan Tomlinson of Bailey  (Source DR19 MM)  Note : She married Richard C [68] in c  1637 ?; died in London in 1695 (Dutton family - 10 children)

1616 - Margaret Crombleholme [Cro0042] baptised at Mitton daughter of  George C [29]   (Source   ) 

Note : married John Hill in 1635 at Mitton - he died after 1644 : will Y3; married Roger Parker in 1651 (noted in will Y2)  (she is noted in will SR9) (Source : Dr19 MM)

1620 - Ellen (nee Hayhurst) [Cro0666] baptised in Mitton daughter of Edward Hayhurst; married (unknown) Crombleholme [Cro0666] - he died before 1663 ; Will NR24 notes daughter Jane C [667] & Margaret C [668] . She died in Mitton in 1663 (Source Dr 19 MM)

1623 - June : Richard Crombleholme [Cro0179] illegitimate son of Ellen Crombleholme [Cro0102] ; died August 1623 (Infant)  aka Gregson in register with mother's name Ellin Gregson - father = Sherburne. Note : Ellen was a concubine of Richard Shireburn in the early 1620's ; illeg children named Shireburn / Gregson Ellen later married (unknown) Gregson - she could be daughter of  Richard C [64] and Tryphena (nee Bymsome) 65 from 1601-1605 period ?

1625 - 25th March : Richard Crombhome [Cro0      ] son of Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0      ]  baptised at Mitton (Source : Mitton Par Reg  Note : “buried” but should be baptised - see 1678 below

1626 : Margaret Crombleholme [Cro0725] married John Bailey of Mitton (Source : Dr 19 MM)

1628 - ?? September : ??  Croumblehoul [Cro0065]- wyff Richard Croumblehoul [Cro0064] buried at All Hallows, Mitton  (Source : Lancs Mitton OPC Burials 1610-1650 p 21 entry 1 - Par reg transcription)    Note : This appears to be Tryphena C (nee Bymsome) [65] wife of Richard Crombleholme [64] of Dutton. (her last child Robert C [76] born 1/9/1627)

1631 - 21st May : Ellen Crombehurst  [Cro1295]   married  to Richard Horner at All Hallows in Mitton (Source : Mitton Par Reg p24 entry 3)

1633 - 16th April : Isobell (Ezebell) Crombleholme (nee ?? ) [Cro0435]  wife of John Cromblehould [Cro0433] buried at Mitton. (Source : Mitton Par Reg p25 entry 2)

1633 - Elizabeth Crombleholme [Cro1295] buried at Mitton; wife of  John Crombleholme [Cro0038]  children 43; 45; 50; & 51 (source : Dr 19 MM)

1633 - 28th May : George Crombleholme [Cro0048] son of William Crombleholme [Cro0040] baptised at All Hallows in Mitton. (Source : Mitton Par Reg p26 entry 1 + LDS 919152 p2 entry1)  Note : He married Jennet Clough in 1663; convicted as recuscant in York in 1670; charged in 1671 as a member of a conventicle; Hearth Tax in 1672; convicyed and fined as a Quaker in 1690; lived in Waddington noted in will SR9

1634 - 18th February : Elizabeth Crombleholme [Cro0047] daughter of William Crombleholme [Cro0040] baptised at All Hallows Mitton  (Source : Mitton Par Reg p27 entry 26) Noted in will SR9 but not named.

1634 - Henry Crombleholme [Cro0664] - only known from record of  664 in this year (Source : dr 19 MM)

1634 - 7th August : (Alice) Allis Croumblehould [Cro0050]   married  to Matthew Crousdell at All Hallows in Mitton (Source : Mitton Par Reg p29 entry 6) Note : D/O William C [38]  noted in fathers will PCC1 & uncle’s will SR9 but not named.

1634 - William Crombleholme [Cro0664]  son of Henry Crombleholme [Cro0663]  buried (Source :    Dr 19      )  (Note was William the same generation as Robert C [661] ?

1635 - 18th February :  Henry Crombleholme [Cro0429]  son  of Richard Crombleholme [Cro0430] baptised at All Hallows, Mitton  (Source : OPC - Mitton Par Reg Baptisms 1610-1643 p31’ entry 24)

1635 - 17th August : Margaret Crumbleholme [Cro0042]  married John Hill at Mitton All Hallows (Source : Mitton Par Reg p32 entry 2 + LDS 919152 p4 entry 2 + Borthwick Yorks )   Note : John Hill was dead after 1646 as noted in Richard C of Thornley will Ref  In 1651 - her sister Ann says her sister Margaret is married to Roger Parker - her 2nd marriage.

1663 - 21st March : Georgius Cromehome [Cro0048]  married Jennetta (nee Clough) [Cro0049] at Mitton All Hallows  (Source : Mitton Par Reg page 75 entry 1 + LDS 919152 p12 entry 2) Note : convicted as recusant in York in 1670

1678/9 - 22nd March : Richard Cromelome [Cro0047] son of Thom Cromelome [Cro0084] buried at All Hallows in Mitton ("in wollen"  sic)   (Source : Mitton Par Reg p53 entry 14)  

Note : "Buried in woollen” : The Burial in Wool Acts of 1667 & 1668 were intended to support the wool trade and required corpses to be buried in wool. A relative of the deceased was required to swear that this had occurred and it was recorded in the register as this one has been. A fine of £5 could be levied on anyone connected with the burial if this was not undertaken. The Acts were repealed in 1814 but had long since fallen into disuse.

1704 - 17th November : Will of Thomas Crombleholm [Cro0430]  of Crawshaw, Mitton proved in Exchequer Court of York  (Source MP letter 7/10/2013 - not seen )  Will Ref Y7 - but see also 1712 below

1711 - 27th March : Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0430] buried at All Hallows, Mitton. Abode : Crawshall. (Source : Lanc OPC Mitton Par Reg Burials p46 entry 1) 

1711 -  April : Will of Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0430]  of Crawshaw, Mitton Parish (Prerogative Court of York Will)  (Source : MP letter dec 1999) not seen  Note : are the 3 Thomas C's above all [430] ?  Will ref Y8 - see also 1704 above !

1712 - 9th August : Ellen Crumbleholme [Cro0652] widow, abode Crawshall, buried at all Hallows in Mitton. (Source : Par Reg (OPC) p70 entry 13.)               Note : Wife of Thomas C [0430]  Children both Richard [431+653] both died young.

1718 - Richard Sherburn was outlawed for high treason (during the first Jacobite Rising) and was seized of an estate called Bayley Hall in the parish of Mitton

.........."and that the said Ric Sherburn made his escape from Preston after the battle there, and it is pretended conveyed his estate after his escape to one William Crombleholme [Cro0 ???] to prevent its forfeiture...."     (Source : Record of Eng. Catholic 1715 - p144)

1751 : Rebecca Crumbleholme [Cro0522]  baptised at Chaigley Lancs Chr Mitton . (Source  IGI = 3 entries 1750/1752/1754!!)  Note : Age from 1767 Return of Papists for Whitewell age 16 = born 1751. 

1783 : George Crombleholme [Cro1241] of Mitton married Anne (nee Tomlinson) [Cro1241] in 1783; died 1809 children 1242-1253 (Source : Dr 19 MM)

1801 - 16th February  : Mary Crombleholme X [Cro0436]  spinster of Chapelry of Whitewell married Richard Fletcher  X  widower, cotton weaver of Mitton at All Hallows, Mitton  Witness : Richard Ashton & Wm Harrison. 1810 - October : Margaret (Crombleholme) [Cro0716] born - illegitimate daughter of Bella Crombleholme [Cro0435]. Born between banns in July and delayed mariiage in December (see below). (Source : MM ID listing for 716)

1810 - 11th December : Bella Crombleholme X [Cro0435]  spinster of this parish married James Gudgeon, schoolmaster of this parish at All Hallows, Mitton. 1832 - 9th January : Elizabeth Crumbleholme [Cro0702]   (X) of Mitton married Edward (aka Edmund) Houlden (X)  of Mitton at All Hallows, Mitton Married by Banns by John Wilson, vicar; Witnesses : John Atherton X & Mary Crumbleholme [Cro0703] X   (Source : OPC via LDS Film 919152 Marriages 1813 - 1837 p111 entry 331)

Note : They had the following children : Thomas b1833; Alice b1834; Richard b1836; Ellen b1837; Joseph b 1837; Elizabeth* b1841; Esther b 1844; Mary Jane b1847; John b1850 & Edward b1841.  The family moved from Leagram into Preston.   Elizabeth* b1841 became a nun belonging to the Order of the Faithful Companions of Jesus. It is understood that she professed in 1868 and died in 1909 at the Gumley House Convent in Isleworth Middlesex. (Information kindly given by Andrew Snape of Whalley email Jan 2021)
