Grymshawe vs Wannesley [i.e. Walmsley]
The document is faded and missing a few sections. The contents add little to the above description. James had three sons – James, William and Richard.
The National Archives catalogue reference under “James Grymshawe” adds the information that the lands included property in Dutton.

I can decipher a few simple words but can’t make sense of the last few lines!
The NA catalogue entry dates the document to 1518-1529. The petition is addressed to Archbishop Thomas Wolsey of York whose tenure in that position was from 1514 to 1530. Robert Crombleholme is named as a defendant and as he died in 1528 the petition must predate his death. The script suggests the petition was written earlier in the time period, or in a hurry. Although the plaintiff, Nicholas Grymshawe, was “of Westminster in the County of Middlesex” his family origins were likely in the Blackburn area. Some of the lands in question were in Dutton and there are Nicholas Grimshaw records in the 16th century for Great Harwood, Blackburn and Accrington.
