Whittingham Family

Whittingham is the southern tithing area of Goosnargh Parish with Crumbleholme Fold in the northern Threlfall tithing area. Goosnargh contains over 9000 acres and as such is one of the largest in the county. It is thought that "argh" is Swedish for ploughed field and "goosen" the old Saxon for the plural of goose

This section of research focuses on the Crombleholme Family descending from Richard Crombleholme [Cro0181] , Yeoman of Whittingham. For some reason his will (Ref NR 26) was abstracted to the British Museum (no reason found as yet, although it may be due to J W Bone FSA who was C19th researcher and contributed a lot of information on the family history).

To date, it has not been possible to relate this family to any others - as it does not appear to be the Crombleholme Fold family of Goosnargh just to the north, it may be the Loudmytham family ?

Haighton is just to the south of this area

Left : The stone built "Hill Chapel" was a Roman Catholic church founded in about 1754 and is dedicated to St Francis of Assisi. (hence St Francis). It was built surrounded by fields to replace the Franciscan chapel known as "The Holy Cross" at Whitehill, Whitechapel which had been founded by Cuthbert Hesketh in 1687 and destroyed by riotous anti catholic mobs. It was altered in 1802 and enlarged later in 1835.
