Slaidburn Family

Note : General records for Slaidburn are at the end of this section

It was thought that this branch of the family descends from Richard Crombleholme [Cro0103] of Crombleholme Fold, Goosnargh but this now appears to be incorrect and more research is required !!

The earliest family member found to date is John Crombleholme [Cro0838] who was born about 1700 and when married to Ellen (nee Bond) [Cro0839] in 1727 is recorded as "of Lickhurst in parish of Chipping". It would therefore appear that this branch descends from the Loudmytham family

Provisional Slaidburn Family Tree

- At Feb2020, Mike Murtha has set out our thoughts to date.

Any relationship or descent from other Crombleholme families has not been found as yet.

Needs amendment !

My thanks to my co-researcher Mike Murtha for the following (Feb 2020) :

Known Relationships :

John Crombleholme [844] , son of John C [838] and Ellen (nee Bond) [839] of Slaidburn, is known from his baptism record in 1739; no records of marriage or children have been found

John C’s [838] relationship to his assumed sons George C [260] and John C [844] is based on indirect information

John C’s [844] oldest brother George C [260] died in 1808 in Slaidburn; he was about 78 years old

George C’s [260] will names nephews and nieces and clearly indicates he is a sibling to Jane (Skirrow) and Margaret (Bannister) and therefore the son of John C [844] and Ellen (nee Bond) [839]; he is thus a brother of John C [844]

There are no children mentioned in the will

His executor is nephew George C [851], grocer in Leeds (and formerly in Preston); nephew GeorgeC’s [851] brother John C [811] is a beneficiary

The suggested relationship between George C [260] and his nephews via John C [843] is based on property records and a process of elimination

Property Records :

George C [260] owned properties in Dunsop and Slaidburn; land tax records indicate he occupied one property; another was occupied by William C [845]. – possibly his brother; in 1794 one property is identified as Woodhouse

George C’s [260] will made monetary bequests to various nieces and nephews; his wife Hannah (nee ?? ) [839] was given an annuity, all his personal estate and lifetime occupancy of a cottage or house

All real estate (Dunsop is mentioned) was devised to his nephew George [851], who received the bulk of the value of the estate

In 1809, in an Inquisition Post Mortem, property in Dunsop was transferred to George C ’s [260] brother JohnC [843]; it is not known when John C [843] died but it is likely that the property then passed to his sons

Nephew John C [811] died about 1816, leaving underage children William C [584] and Jane C [853]; his widow Esther (nee Slater) [812] re-married in 1817, to George Briggs; nephew George C [851] was evidently named as trustee of the children’s inheritance (his nephew and niece)

Nephew George C [851] died in 1820 whilst on a business trip to New York (USA) - he was noted as merchant.

Court litigation in the mid-1820s on behalf of William C [584] and Jane C [853] resulted in an award that included income from property at Woodhouse; presumably this was their entitlement via their father John, paid to them when they were in their later teens

Process of Elimination :

George C [260] had four brothers

Joseph C [841] of Higher Salter, died in Dec 1780 at about age 50; his will does not mention a wife or children

William C [845] and his wife Betty (nee Chapham) [846] lived initially in Melling and later Slaidburn; they had sons George C [855] who married Jemima (nee Harrison) [856] and John C [854] ; George C 855] died about 1810 and was described as a yeoman living in Dunsop

Richard C [847] and his wife Agnes (nee Wildman) [848] lived in Melling; they had two daughters - Ellen C [857] & Agnes C [860] and a son John C [858], who married Elizabeth (nee Wilson) [859], he was described as a “Gent” and lived for many years in Burton in Lonsdale

Consequently the fourth brother, John C [843] , must be the father of George C [851] and John C [811]

In 1807 they were recorded as grocers in Preston; John C [811] was declared bankrupt in Preston in 1808

George C [851] must have moved to Leeds; in his uncle George C’s [260] will of 1808 will he was residing in Leeds. In the 1810 settlement for Jemima (nee Harrison) [856], widow of his cousin George C [855]. He was described as a shopkeeper in Leeds; he died in New York in 1820 and David Crowther, presumably a lawyer acting on his behalf, became the guardian of William C [584] and Jane C [853], who also received proceeds from George C’s [851] U.S. property. In the final settlement of George C's [851] estate in 1830, he was described as formerly of Slaidburn

Higher Salter - a sketch by Arthur Wainwright from his superb "Bowland Sketchbook" Joseph C [841] lived here - noted in his will NR11 of 1780. (see below)

The old road over Salter Fell was a trade route used by packhorses bringing salt from Morecombe Bay to the east Lancashire / Yorkshire areas. It is pretty isolated with no other buildings for some 9 miles until Slaidburn to the south east is reached. To the north west, there are the similar hill farms of Middle & Lower Salter. Prior to 1974, these three hill farms were in Yorkshire - they are now all in Lancashire.

I did mountain bike up to here in 1990 with my son Simon when he was about 12 years old - in the days when I could keep up with him !!

1820 - January : George Crombleholme [Cro0851] died in New York in North America (see above) formerly of Slaidburn Lancs. The York Probate lists mention all children of his brother John C [Cro0837] who had died in 1816. -JohnC’s [837] wife Esther (nee Salter) [Cro0812] remarried to George Briggs in 1817)

For some reason, the copy of an advertisement (see below) from the Law Advertiser of 1830 was in our Weymouth family papers ! Perhaps, it was hoped that there was money to be claimed ! As can be seen, George Crumbleholme [Cro0851] was formerly of Slaidburn in Lancashire UK.

His brother John C’s [Cro0811] wife Esther [Cro0812] had remarried. George was noted as a "merchant" in New York where he died in January 1820. Back in 1980, an American correspondent Gloria Welch found a George Crumby aged 28 arriving in New York in 1820 - he was listed as a mechanic. He had sailed from Britain on the Brig Hope (the captain was Egbert Smith). This boat is recorded as having arrived from Havana on 19th January 1820.

1824 - 1828 - William [Cro0584] & Jane Crumbleholme [Cro0853] late infants (Plaintiffs) v George Briggs and Esther [812] his wife. Subject : Children / litigation personal estate (Source : Nat Archives Chancery ref C 101/6622 - RC photographed in full Nov 2018 at NA.)

Background : George Crumbleholme appears to have been an uncle to the two children noted in this case with his brother John C having married Esther (nee Slater) in December 1806. George had married Hannah (nee Brennan) in 1803 and married again in Sept 1806 to Jemima (nee Harrison). John C died in 1816 and his widow Esther married George Briggs in 1817. George Crombleholme had gone to New York in North America at some point and died there in January 1820 being noted as a merchant . Jemima appears to have married John Bond in 1811 - ??? A Jemima Bond is noted as receiving an annual annuity in the accounts of the case and it is presumed that Jemima had remarried before 1824. Her last annuity was paid in 1826 - did she die then ?? The accounts had been agreed in 1829 and the advert (see above) in 1830 was presumably to find any other claimants to the intestate estate.

Brief summary of case : William & Jane Crumbleholme are described as late infants but now of full age (William would have been 18 in 1824 & Jane ??? ) A receiver (William Gibson) was appointed & receipts from rents (from 1824 to 1828) from the real estate at Woodhouse, Slaidburn amounted to £322 10s 0d and proceeds of intestate's (ie George Briggs) property in America with interest £1766 13s 3d giving a total of £2089 3s 0d. In 1829, an account of payments made from 1824 to 1829 was drawn up and included many items of maintenance (ie clothing, hats, boots & medicine) for William & Jane Crumbleholme during this period. Other payments were made in connection with maintenance of the estate, rent collection and debts of Esther Briggs. An annuity of £13 was paid to Jemima Bond from 1824 with the last being in November 1826. A single annuity of £2 10s was also paid to a John Bannister in 1825. Total payments in this period amounted to £2000 17s 7d. The balance left was £88 5s 8d.

The final report and balance was agreed and signed in Manchester on the 26th June 1833 by William Gibbons.

Note : From record below, it would appear that George C [ ] was forced to sell Dunsop Farm. In the Census returns above he is noted as a farmer of 75 acres in 1881 but just as a farmer in 1891 - it would seem that the family stayed in the area perhaps as a tenant of the farm ? By 1901, the Littlefair family occupied it.
