New section at January 2018 after discovery of records (ranging from 1655 to 1721) relating to the Crimble (and spelling variants) family name in Dorchester, Dorset. Whether this name is related to the Samuel Cromleholme [Cro0479] who was Headmaster of the Free School in Dorchester between 1651 & 1657 remains to be seen. There is also a another Cromleholme record in 1664 (see below) The Crimble family may, of course, descend independently from the Lancashire area.
Crimble Records Notes by Mike Murtha - who found the records via Ancestry Jan 2018
Ancestry has many records for members of a Crimble/Crimbel family at St. Peter’s Church, Dorchester. The records cover the 1660-1720 period, then seem to disappear.
There is also a single record for the baptism and burial in 1664 of Richard Cromleholme , son of John Cromleholme.
There are a couple of Crimble baptisms recorded at Holy Trinity church in Dorchester in the early 1700s. The name Crimwell/Crinwell is frequently recorded but this is a variant of Cromwell which also appears in the register.
There are no Crombleholme or Crimble records for All Saints, Dorchester for the time period.
The Oxford Dictionary of Names says that Crimble is a predominantly Lancashire name found, for example, in Cockerham and Heysham. It has the same meaning as “Crumble” – crooked. There is a locality near Cockerham called “Crimbles.”
Could Crimble be a local variant of Crumble(holme)?
