1840’s : Information from Rik Crombleholme of Ormskirk family (Sept 2019) : Ormskirk gasworks is now the site of Morrisons store and a Crombleholme of my family worked here from 1840s to my grandfather in 1948. I am working on finding local pictures now. One group of Crombleholmes went to work for the Countess of Scarisbrick at Scarisbrick Hall in the private gasworks in the grounds around the 1870s - they lived in workers buildings and a daughter worked as maid.

(Further information from Rik 27/09/2019) :

The following family members with birth and death dates lived at Scarisbrick hall from c1877 to 1884

Henry C (1843-1896) with his wife Sarah 1843-1905 & children

Richard C (my [Rik's] great granddad) 1867-1941.

John - 1869-1918; Henry 1871-1920; James 1872-1941; Elizabeth 1873-1936; Mary Ann 1878 1918 - she was born here and they lived in servants quarters but they were back in Ormskirk by 1884 as there final child George was born in Ormskirk 1884-1932.

Maria in 1865 was a downstairs maid; Sarah's sister Elizabeth b1852 worked as maid in Ormskirk. They lived close to Ormskirk gasworks in Dyers Lane and Aughton St Henry.

Richard, young Henry, James, George, old Henry's brother John (1840-1911) and my grandad Richard Henry (1891-1948) worked at Ormskirk gasworks. They worked as stokers, exhausters and foreman - it was a heavy job and from what I know they were big men.

(Further information from Rik 28/09/2019)

Some more information : the 4 young children Arthur, Hilda, Ethel and Stanley who all died young were children of James (1872-1941) and Ellen (nee Fazakerly) (1872-1952). They also had the following other children Harold (1900 - ); Florence (1906-1982): Albert (1908-1965); James (1910-1969); and Alfred (1913-1983). I cannot find a death date for Harold but he was married and went to USA.

(Further information from Rik 04/10/2019)

The Rev Richard C's daughters died during the Great Winter of 1728. This was the time of the Thames frost fairs in London also Ormskirk gas works opened in 1835. The first street lights are installed in 1840, making Ormskirk one of the 1st small towns in the country to have gas although the sad fact is though, that they had no running water till the 1850s, after the typhoid outbrake that killed my great great great grandad Richard Henry. A Board of Health was set up in 1851 to sort out the massive overcrowding and pollution in Dyers Lane and Aughton Street caused by the massive influx of Irish farm workers fleeing Ireland during the potato famine . For once politics worked ! - no more serious outbreaks. Dyers Lane was called "little Ireland" by old timers . (information freely available in Ormskirk library) Richard Henry's daughter Mary also died during same outbreak.
