1855 - 3rd September : William Crombleholme [Cro ] killed in a fatal boiler explosion in the cotton spinning factory of Messrs Lancaster & Isherwood, Ribbleton Lane, Preston. A few minutes before 6am on Monday morning the 30HP cylindrical boiler exploded. At the time, the engineer's assistant William Crombleholme was engaged in the boiler house when one of the two flues collapsed. The steam and boiling water issued with terrific force, bursting open the fire door and sweeping the bars clear of the ashes. It is not known what Crombleholme was doing at the time but he was found in about 10 minutes afterwards upon the masonry of the boiler. The persons who discovered him having been guided to his whereabouts through the smoke and steam by the groans of the dying man. It is supposed that he endeavoured to escape from the boiler house through a shaft hole into the engine room above.. He was immediately conveyed to his lodgings adjoining the mill, where he died in about an hour after the accident from the effect of the injuries he had sustained by scalding. The inquest found the engineer Henry Pickup guilty of manslaughter. The boiler was low on water and iron plugs had been substituted for the lead ones that would have melted at high temperature putting the fire out. Crombleholme was said to be 33 years old and unmarried. (Source : Manchester Guardian & Preston Morning Post Thursday 6th September 1855)
