This section features research into two entrepreneurs based in the Manchester area :
Richard Crumbleholme [Cro0154] (1768-1814) and his younger brother Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0161] (1777-1815). They descend from the main Dutton family via the Crombleholme Fold family.

Their Parents were Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0146] (1735-1818) and his wife Agnes (nee Teebay) [Cro0147] (1739-1797).
Thomas Crumbleholme [Cro0146] (senior) was born in 1735, the son of Richard Crombleholme [Cro0123] who was the last member of the family living at Crombleholme Fold in Goosnargh. The family moved to nearby Inglewhite "with a view to embarking in a manufacturing business" (Source : Chetham Old Series Vol 105 p259).

Little is known about Thomas C's [146] (sen)'s early life. However, by the time he married aged 30 in 1765, he had already moved (c1763) to nearby Garstang and was earning a living as a dyer.
Later in 1801, he was still a dyer but also a farmer in the Garstang area and in a letter written in 1801 to his eldest son John Crombleholme [Cro0152] (who was then living in Bordeaux, France), he describes himself as ....”being in a comfortable position, carrying on the business of dyeing, as well as farming with his son in law William Bamber" (husband of his daughter Elizabeth C [160]) (Source : Chetham Old series Vol 105 p259)
1765 - 14th January : Thomas Crombleholme [Cro0146] of the parish of Garstang, Dyer, married Agnes (nee Teebay) [Cro0147] of the parish of Blackburn, spinister at St Helens Church, Garstang. Married by licence, James Fisher, minister, (both signed), witnesses : John Thorney & Henry Lucas. John C [Cro0152] Eldest son born in 1766; educated in France as a monk but became a lecturer in Paris, married Eleonore de Balay, moved to Mauritius as Professor of English and became a plantation owner. John returned and died in Nantes, France in 1838 - no children. Full details

Elizabeth C [Cro0160] born 1776; died 1823/43?; married William Bamber in 1798; they moved to Ohio in North America in 1819. The
Thomas C [Cro0161] born 1780; died before 1818; married Ann (nee Burgess) [Cro0629] 22/4/1802 in Wilslow, Cheshire. They had four children : Richard C [164] b1809 moved to Ohio d 1852; George C [165] b1814 moved to Ohio d1870; Mary Anne C [166] b1815; Catherine C [167] b 1818;
Richard’s [154] elder brother John Crombleholme [Cro0152] attended a local school at Garstang Church Town near his home until he was 14 years old until, in 1779, he was sent abroad to France and attended the College of Dieulouard in Lorraine. It is not known whether Richard Crombleholme [Cro0154], who was two years younger, also attended the local school in Garstang.
Richard Crombleholme [Cro0154] had followed his father into the dyeing trade and later farmed in Ordsall near Salford before founding the company noted below. (Source : for farming in Ordsall -Fishwick in his History of Goosnargh (p178)

1787 - 30th December : Richard Crombleholme [Cro0154] “X” Dyer of this parish & town of Salford, married Elizabeth (nee Bradshaw) [Cro0155] “X” spinister of Salford aforesaid at Collegiate Church of St Mary, St Denys & St George, Manchester, Lancashire. Witness Henry Aspinall & Joseph Seddon. Banns Read: 1 Oct 1787, 2nd: 8 Oct 1787, 3rd: 15 Oct 1787. Married by Banns by: Humphrey Owen. (Source: LDS Film 2356674 + Register: Marriages 1787, Page 227, Entry 891) (Note Richard was 19 and Elizabeth (b1769) 18 years old; he made his mark here but signed his will in 1814.

Agnes [Cro0565] born 1797; died 1797 as an infant.
Richard [Cro0209] born 1800; died 1821 killed in a fall from a horse

** Note : In 1814, his father Richard Crombleholme [Cro0154]’s will (SR4) states that William Henry Crombleholme [1149] - was the child of Elizabeth Cooksay otherwise Gaskell residing in Lothbury, London;
William [1149] later lived in Dudley, Worcs and married Maria (nee Mainwaring) [Cro1150] in 1834 & Amelia (nee Massey) [Cro1156] in 1855 - had 8 children; died 1891. See Dudley section
