University 2 were our opponents in the first round of this year's Frank Wood Shield. As they are a third division side, the handicap rules meant that we had to beat them by a margin of 4.5-1.5 or more. This might seem straight forward, but one early bad result can put huge pressure on the other players in the team. Last year, we were dumped out of the cup, in a similar situation when we only beat Witney 3 by 4 games to 2.
This year, we avoided any such embarrassment. Rod, Paul and Dave won quickly, allowing them to spend time watching the top boards cruise to victory at a more sedate pace. Endre went on to win in a game where he controlled the entire board. Ray easily concluded a won end game, whilst Will was a model of patience, defusing all counter-play, before winning with an h4, h5 attack.
