Cowley 1 scored their first win of the season by beating Didcot 1 by 3.5 to 3.5. The first results went our way, so it always looked as if we would win, but the result was close in the end. Will sac'ed his Bishop on f7 early in the opening, and it was clear that his opponent's embarrassed king wasn't going to last for very long. Paul got a comfortable draw and Dave also won after forcing his opponent's pieces to the edges of the board. When Maria broke through on the Queen side and won a rook and the game, the match was already Cowley's. There were chances to win on the remaining boards. Nick quite rightly turned down a draw offer, but his attack couldn't overcome the defences and he went on to lose. Rod was under pressure in the middle game, but transformed it into a good endgame. He also was met by clever defence that stopped his passed pawn, and his own King side led to the loss of the game.
We we into this match at the bottom of the league, and finished it in fifth position (out of 8), There is going to be an almighty relegation battle later on in the year, and with, at last, competition for Witney, at the top, it looks to be one of the most exciting seasons in a long time.
