Basic Cord Cutting System
The simplest cord cutting setup is to use a digital antenna connected to an HD or 4K TV. See blue line in image below. In a basic system, the TV tuner and streaming server are not required.
TVs have built in tuners. HD and 4K TVs have a scan function to search for local channels. Be sure to orient the digital antenna towards the broadcast towers.
The TV's remote is enough to control everything.
There are several issues with a basic system. Each TV requires its own digital antenna and Digital Video Recorder (DVR, or Peersonal Video Recorder, PVR). A recorded show can only be watched in the room with the DVR.
Digital Over-the-Air or Broadcast TV Cord Cutting System
The next most complicated system is a digital streaming systems. See image above and follow black line.
A digital antenna receives the broadcast signal and connects to a Tablo. which has 4 TV Tuners. A Tablo TV Tuner can tune to one channel at a time. Tablo also has a two channel model
The tuner and server convert the broadcast signal to a protocol that can be packetized and sent throughout a home network. The server tunes into a specific channel, and can also provide recording and playback capabilities (i.e., DVR or PVR). The server also connects to an Electronic Program Guide, which lists the channels, times and TV shows.
The server connects to your home network via an ethernet port. The tuned in TV channel is sent through your home network.
A streaming receiver connects to your TV and accepts the channel and displays it on your TV. The streaming server also acts as the whole-home DVR, but only for broadcast stations. A broadcast show can be recorded in any room and played back in any room.
A TV's or Fire TV's remote is enough to control this system.
The streaming receiver, Live tab in Fire TV, tells the server the channel to tune to.
This system can support multiple TVs. Fire TV Recast has an odd limitation, only three TVs can be watching live TV. But a combination of live TV and recorded can use all four tuners.
