Slaughter on an Acre

It was just an empty field they said. It was useless, unproductive waste land. They came with bulldozers and began to rip and tear it up. Thus began the Slaughter on an acre.

It unfolded -- rabbits, mice, ground hogs, snakes, toads were caught in the carnage. Ants and crickets too. They all scurried in panic.

But so many were crushed. They screamed for a few moments. Burrows were covered and gouged, tiny blind babies died within.

But no one was there to witness this. Cars passed, radios pounding. No one stopped to witness the massacre.

In two hours they were done. A nice newly plowed and flattened space emerged, the holy templum for a strip mall. It was clean and attractive, neat, angular, symmetrical, free of weeds and bushes and trees. It was like our world, clean and dead. And thus full of possibilities...when before it was useless and not accretive.

Below the surface was death, blood and little torn bodies. They had a few moments of life in this universe, they are now gone because of this unpredicted storm of pain and shock.

But they die anyway in Nature don’t they? They only live a few years anyway, and babies, well, most don’t make it out of the nest do they? So what was the difference?

Perhaps that Nature is cruel because it must be, but Human beings have a choice for they have transcended to new level?

There were no Witnesses, and there were no Saviors either.

And later no one came to cry or bless this ground. There was no sanctification, no memorial, no tears.

Where are the Sanctifiers, the Witnesses and the Saviors?
