Surrealism Painting

The assignment was to combine pictures to make a surrealist painting and collage. There had to be a background, foreground, and mid ground. The subject of my creation is a cat in a frying pan with an orange on it (it's supposed to look like an egg). I used acrylic paint to make new colors, shades, and tints.

I used color to makes certain things in my painting pop out. I used texture in the cat's fur and in the bread, to show the holes and air pockets. I used line to create the look of wood on the board under the pan. Pattern was used in the tablecloth, with the diamonds and stripes. I tried to make the orange stand out by using a really bright orange color (emphasis). I realized that the tablecloth was going to be really hard to make all of the patterns on so i made a similar pattern that was easier to paint. Before the idea of the cat in the pan, I was going to do a penguin in the desert, but I liked the cat idea better.

I saw a picture of a cat with an orange on it and I thought it was an egg at first so I thought it would be cool to put the cat in the frying pan on the table. I also really like cats, so I liked the idea of incorporating one in my painting. I'm proudest of the cat and the orange; I think I did a good job on the shades on the orange and the fur on the cat. I struggled with the bread and the background. The texture on the bread was really hard to make. With the background, I let the paint dry and then came back to it, but then, I couldn't get the right color, so the colors aren't consistent on the background. If I could change something, it would be the way I did the tablecloth. I think I could have practiced the shading where the handle made the shade on the cloth; it looks a little sloppy there.
