Scratchboard

The assignment was to take a picture we had photographed ourselves, print it, grid it, and then grid the scratchboard itself. We had to use three different tools, each used for a certain "kind" of scratching. The subject of my creation in the first scratchboard is the butterfly and in the second scratchboard, its the cat. I used two types of scratching materials, the chisel thing and the sharp point one.

I used line and value to show the light and dark spots on the leaves and on the cat's fur; I used contrast to show the difference between the different light and dark spaces. In the first scratchboard, I had trouble bringing out the highlights; I was making light where there should be dark and vice versa.

The meaning behind the artwork is that I think drawing animals is fun and they all look different so I thought it would be nice to do animals for my project. I'm proudest of the cat fur because I had a hard time with the value lines when I did the value strip. In the butterfly board, I had a hard time with the leaves because there were a bunch of little lines that were hard to do so I just made a new design that still looked like a leaf. I struggled with the proportion on the nose in the cat board but I ended up painting over it with ink.

Something that bothers me in the butterfly board is that the leaves seem very boring and not as detailed; I would spend more time on those. I like the cat scratch board, so I don't think I would change anything in it. :')
