The assignment was to create a poster for the Donate Life Maine organization. We could use any material; I chose graphite, watercolor, and magazine pieces. The subject of my creation is a modified Rosie the Riveter, with the slogan being changed from "We Can Do It" to "You Can Do It", with Rosie herself being transformed into a doctor. First, I came up with a slogan and used 1940s propaganda posters for ideas. Then I sketched the figure with graphite and the decided to use magazine clippings to "color" it. I then came up with a slogan to go along with it.
I used color and contrast to make the piece more eye catching so it would stand out, which is what posters are supposed to do. I used line to help the figure stand out more and be more noticeable from far away. I was originally going to do the project with graphite and colored pencil but then I thought that I would probably ruin it by using colored pencil, so I went with magazine once again.
As I said earlier, I wanted to make it like an ad or propaganda poster from the 1940s, and what better figure to use than the famous Rosie the Riveter? I've done some other art with her and thought it would be cool to continue it. I like how the doctor came out; I wasn't sure if I would make her look like a doctor, but its decent. I struggled with coming up with an idea. There were so many different ways I could have gone with this project and I didn't know where to start. Something I would fix is the lettering; it seems a little messy.
