Title: Dog Flower

Medium: Watercolor and pen

Size of Work: 8''x11''

In the center of the page is a flower. But it is not an ordinary flower; it has red tentacles and a dog snout. For added detail, I have a bee about to perch on this dog's nose. This is thought provoking: will the dog bite the bee? Will the bee sting the dog? The flower is based off a black-eyed susan, a plant that I've always liked. I also really like bees, so I decided to add one. I purposely left the background white (despite knowing that this is frowned upon) because I wanted the flower to stand out.

First, I sketched out my design with a 2B graphite pencil. After deciding to use watercolor, I wanted to make sure there was emphasis on the shadows and lines of the flower, dog, and tentacles. I was originally going to make the flower more like a rose or lily of the valley, but decided it would be easier to add the tentacles with a simple flower, like a daisy or black-eyed susan. I also thought it would be intriguing to have the tentacles almost look like red petals, but if you looked closer, would actually be tentacles. Looking back, I think I would want to add smaller flowers around the big one, possibly dandelions or Indian paintbrushes, then maybe add a very light blue background.
