Relief

The assignment was to choose a picture that we took and turn it into a sculpture. It could either be relief or 3D. I chose a picture of a lion and then posterized it so it would be easier to make the different sections of the lion. I used bark and sticks and then used acrylic paint to outline it because you couldn't really tell what it was unless you looked at the reference image.

I used shape to make it pop out a little more. I used texture with the bark; you can really tell its made out of bark. I used color by choosing several colors of bark and sticks to make the different parts of the lion stand out. I was originally going to use yarn because a lion is a cat and cats are associated with yarn. But then I realized that since it was so big, I don't think I would have had enough yarn to cover the whole thing.

I really like lions and big cats and you don't see a lion everyday, so I thought it would be fun to do a sculpture of one. I really liked gathering all of the materials and thinking through how I would use them. I struggled a lot with making it look like a lion and making the pieces of bark stick on. I had to break them into smaller pieces so the glue could stay onto the base. Once I finished, I realized I was the only one that could tell what it was because I was staring at it the whole time, so I decided to outline it with white and black paint. If I could do something better it would be to be a little more careful with the glue and make sure you can't see it where I don't want it to be seen.
