Dragon Sky

Size: 8''x11''

Medium: colored pencil and pen

In the center of the page is a black and blue dragon, which I tried to blend into the night sky. Under it, I drew mountains, which sets the scene. I've always been fascinated by fantasy and mythical creatures, dragons especially. I usually picture dragons living in caves in the mountains away from people and flying in the cover of darkness. Unfortunately, I struggle with the form and proportion of the dragon, which is frustrating for me. With this piece, I wanted to try a different angle of the dragon: the backside, so I attempted to make it look like he was shooting up directly from the ground in a great hurry.

For this piece, I started out by sketching the shapes with a 2B graphite pencil. Next, I used indigo blue, violet, black, blue slate, and cloud blue Prismacolors. I drew the mountains with a .5 Micron ink pen.

The sky was quite difficult for me to make; I've always had a hard time blending colors and making them seem whole and complete. I tried to balance the blues and black; not having too much of one color. I left a white "aura" around the dragon, to make him stand out. One important thing to note is that this is not the original paper the ink was dropped on. The first draft was quite atrocious & I didn't like it, so I decided to cut out the ink splotches and placed them on drawing paper in the same places they were before. My next steps would be to make the colors darker and more defined and to add more detail in the sky and on the dragon.
