Hands

The assignment was to create a plaster hand out of an alginate mold. First, we mixed the alginate and poured it into an 8oz cup and stuck our hand in the position we wanted it to be in. It had to be in a position where the fingers wouldn't break off. After the alginate hardened, we mixed the plaster and poured it into the place where our hands were and waited for it to harden and dry. After it had hardened, we picked the alginate off of it and set the hand out to dry, because it still had moisture in it. Next, I drew designs on my first hand with sharpie. Before this, I made a parakeet out of sculpey and added a falconer's hood on it because why not? Then I added designs on the bird to make it match my hand. I made the second hand after and had an Indian theme to it.

I used line with the designs on the hand and bird. I used contrast with the black sharpie on the white hand, and in the colors of the bird. I used unity when I decided to add designs on the bird to make it match the hand. I was originally going to make a falcon for my hand but then I realized that would be too heavy for my hand to support, and I also didn't feel comfortable making it with the sculpey after I started using it.

I really like birds and I find falconry especially interesting, so I decided to tie my project into that. I thought it would be interesting and thought provoking to have a little parakeet wearing a falconer's hat. I'm proudest of the designs on the hand and I think the bird is okay, considering I've never used sculpey before. I struggled with making him in the beginning because sculpey is a new/weird material and it's hard to make detail with. If I could improve, it would be to fix the bird and to make the hand look more interesting. I personally don't really like my hand, so there's many things that I would want to improve on.
