Concentration #3

The assignment was to continue with our concentrations (mine being chickens). I created a wire rooster, because roosters have many more interesting contours than hens and I wanted to improve my skills with wire. I used a technique I'd never used before, which was coiling the wire to make a sort of spring for the neck and head. I also wrapped wire around the torso to make it look more filled.

I used line to trace the contours of the rooster and to try to get the detail to show, especially in the head. I used form in the tail feathers, to make them look like actual feathers and make them stand out more. I used balance when trying to make it stand (I added feet later). I was originally going to make it more detailed, but it wasn't really turning out how I wanted it, so I made it more abstract.

I really like using wire and I wanted to improve my skills with it. I've used roosters in almost all of my projects, so I wanted to do another one, especially since the wire could bring out the interesting contours. I'm proudest of how the head came out, with the coil for the beak and how the comb and wattles came out. I struggled a lot with making the neck be supported and not fall over. I also struggled a lot with the legs; I spent a long time trying to make them support the body. In the end, I decided to make the legs, but not have it standing, but make it a hanging ornament. If I could fix something, it would be the tail feathers. I would make them a little bigger and add more feathers.
