The assignment was to pick a photo we took and convert it to black and white. We then had to grid it and a separate piece of paper we were drawing on. The drawing had to include ink, graphite, and charcoal. The subject of my creation is a chicken that I have, named Sally. As stated above, I used charcoal, graphite, and ink.

I used texture in making the feathers and attempting to show the detail. I used balance by using different materials for different things. I also used contrast with the contrast of black and white. I was originally going to use a lot of graphite, but I decided to use charcoal instead because it was easier to spread around and you could get varying shades of black.

I decided to do this picture because I've always liked to draw chickens and this is one of my favorites and she was black and white, so it made it easy to do the black and white. I think the face of the chicken is what I'm most proud of. It has some good detail around the comb and the feathers around the eyes. I struggled with the feathers on the neck, it was hard to get those to look like feathers and not just ovals with lines. I would fix the very bottom on my drawing, where there are mostly just lines and not a lot of detail. I'm going to try to take my time in the future.
