The assignment was to make a sculpture out of anything that we could afford. This could be plastic, trash, cardboard, tin, newspaper, wood, clay, or a combo. The subject of my creation is a cardboard lion with "liony" colored magazine clippings glued to it. I first drew a to scale picture of the lion and then cut out the cardboard, making each piece smaller than the next so that it would be layered. Then I went through magazines and found colors such as browns, blacks, yellows, and reds to glue onto the lion to make up the face, fur, and mane. At then at the end, I covered the face with mod podge to keep the small pieces on the face from falling off.
I used color to show the different variations of color in a lion; I used the texture from the magazine pictures to show the texture on my lion, I had a lot of fur clips. I tried to emphasize the eyes by using the well-known National Geographic Afghan girl's eyes as my lion's. At first I wasn't going to add the layers of magazine clips, but I thought it would look interesting.
I made one of these pop-up sculptures before, from a kit, so I thought it would be fun to design and make my own. I also really like cats and wild animals, so I wanted to incorporate that in my project. I'm proudest of how the mane came out, with the variation of colors and how you can still tell what the pictures were. I struggled in finding the right colors for the face and mane, but I started to use colors that were not just browns, I leaned towards oranges and yellows too. I think I would add more layers to the mane, because the rest of the face is very 3D.
