Kiyen - Vigor
Vigor is an important characteristic for people who lead social change. Vigor means to have active strength or energy in the body or mind. Showing vigor is also similar to being determined. You can use vigor when something happens in your life and you can use strength in the mind to fight back the negative voices in your mind away. You can also use vigor when you are doing something that uses energy to help you accomplish something. Jim Abbott shows vigor and I show vigor as well.
A person that uses my factor of success is Jim Abbott. In, “ Jim Abbott”, Bill Nowlin and Clayton Trutor says, “ Jim Abbott Became the first U.S. one handed pitcher to beat the Cuban national team in Cuba in 25 years.” This evidence says that Jim Abbott when he was pitching had to use vigor to be the first U.S. one handed pitcher and to beat Cuba. Another evidence piece from the text is that Jim Abbott learned a technique from his father, “ For handling his glove-hand switch which allowed him to throw and catch the ball with the same hand. Over the years he threw a ball moving closer and closer making the hand transition faster and faster.” This tells us that he had to use strength in the body and mind to do the hand transition so he could play baseball with one hand. Jim Abbott being vigorous helped him change peoples mind that people can play baseball with one hand and showed the people who said he couldn’t play baseball, wrong.
I see vigor in myself by showing it in my sports or in my life. I needed this quality in my life when the first time I started baseball. When I was 9. I first started baseball my first sport. Some of my friends at school told me that I was too young to play ,and I won’t be good because I was just starting. When I got to tryouts I wanted to prove those guys wrong. At first I had to practice catching then I got better. As time went on my first game was getting closer. When It was my first game I played first base. I remembered what my friend’s said of how I wouldn’t be good at baseball for my first time. As the day went on I did really good for my first time and got people out. I felt good about myself and couldn’t wait to tell my friend’s that I proved them wrong. This changed my friends minds about me with baseball and I showed them that they shouldn’t be afraid to try something new. I told them that you should use vigor in the mind to fight back the negative voices that people said about you and try your best even if it’s your first time doing something.
While creating my yard sign for the 5th grade Campaign for Leadership, I had to make several design choices. I chose FASTER ONE because it looks like the letters are getting bigger and stronger every time it's gets big. I chose a dark red because it looks like the muscles in our body are getting more energy ,and strength everytime it gets bigger.
Vigor is an important Factor of Success for people who have lead social change. Being vigorous is important because people use strength in the mind or body to do something that others say they can't do. This quality relates to leaders and social change because leaders can use the strength in mind to fight back the voices that are negative ,and to use the strength in the body to not fight back the things you want to do that is wrong. This quality also relates to social change because it helps the other people that disagreed to the things that people thought others couldn’t do. Using the Factor of Success, vigor matters because it’s an important characteristic in life to use when someone tells you or thinks that you can’t do something ,or when you use energy to accomplish something.
