Becca - Determined
Being determined is an important characteristic for people who lead social change. Determined means trying your best and not giving up to do something. Doing your best not to give up and show determination. I think people should be determined because I want them to try their best on what they are doing and not give up. They should show determination on what they want to accomplish. Jim Abbott is determined by playing baseball and I am determined in math.
Jim Abbott is a leader who is determined to play baseball with one hand. In the text, Jim Abbott, the author says “at every step, from Little League on. He kept hearing that his playing days would probably end at that level. But at each new level, Jim proved his doubters wrong.” This explains that Jim was determined to prove dis doubters wrong and move up to the next level. Another piece of evidence from the text is, “When he entered high school at Flint Central, his new couch doubted Jim would be able to defend his position adequately. But Jim actually fielded well enough to play first base and the out field when he wasn't pitching.” In the sixth paragraph. His coach didn't even believe it was not going to happen for him just because he has no right hand. Jim Abbott used determination to change people’s thoughts about people with a disability. Just because people have a disability does not mean they can't do something their good at and love.
I’m determined mostly in math. Story problems are sometimes hard for me but if I try hard enough to other times its not. One time I wanted to give up and not even try because I couldn't do it. Then, I started crying because I couldn't do it. Ever since then I have always tried harder and now they are starting to get easier. This could bring change because people start seeing me being determined to do something, they might want to try harder too. While creating my yard sign for 5th grade Campaign for Leadership, I had to make several design choices. I chose the font chewy because it is soft but still thick and easy to see. When I look at the word I feel calm and I want to try harder. I chose the color blue because for me that color with that font it makes me feel like I want to try harder and make things happen. I think it is the perfect match.
A characteristic that is important for leaders of social change is being determined. This quality is important because they might need to something that is challenging and needs to be determined to get through it. Jim Abbott was determined to play baseball because he did not have a right hand. This matters because he changed people's perspective. People said Jim Abbott would stop playing baseball soon just because he does not have a right hand.
