Determination is an important characteristic for people who lead social change. Determination means to have a firmness of purpose, to get something done even if you don’t want to finish it so you push yourself to get it done. Showing resilience is similar to determination, but it is different because determination is used when things are challenging however your not necessarily coming back from a bad situation. Jim Abbott shows determination when he played Major League Baseball with a major disability. I use a lot of determination in my life. Determination helps Jim Abbott and me become leaders. Jim Abbott and I show the same characteristic.

Jim Abbott shows and has a lot of determination. Jim Abbott shows determination when he plays baseball. In the article in ELA module 3, it says, “Pitched with a right handed fielder's glove perched pocket-down over the end of his stubbed right arm. At the conclusion of his delivery he would defty slip his left hand into the glove and be ready to field the ball.” That shows determination because Jim Abbott tried to throw the ball be ready to catch with one hand when he had a major disability. This shows that he had firmness of purpose to throw and catch the ball.

Another person who shows determination is me. While I was in school we were taking CMAS. On the first day we did it I was taking a literacy test and I was on the last question and I didn't want to do it. On the second day I was testing again and I had a lot of time left, but then I thought that I wanted to finish it this time, so then I got it done! This was an example of determination. Another time I used determination is when I taught younger kids about taking care of our earth. In my environment crew, we learned about renewable and non-renewable resources. Renewable means that you can reuse it and, non-renewable means you can’t use it again. I read a book to the younger students. I also learned and taught about conserving. Conserving means to save things, for example to save water or electricity. This shows determination because it was hard to get the kids’ attention so I had to say there attention getter over and over again.

In order to make my personal Determination into a brand, I had to make a specific decisions so it could be high quality work for a yard sign. First, I had to choose a font type that would show my special kind of Determination. Through my experiences, I realize that you have to have guts to do determination and try your best to get things done. My font shows that I was determined to learn and write in cursive. Why I chose “cookie” is because I was determined to learn a new handwriting. Next, I had to choose a color that would represent determination. Even I choose “cookie” because it looks like cursive. My experience with NWEA or CMAS is you have to do the test even if you don’t want to or feel like it. I choose green because I thought that green ment for trying your best and doing it. Those are the decisions I made to make my personal yard sign trait.

That is how Jim Abbott and I show the same characteristics in life. This quality is important because a lot of people don’t really want to do anything but they need to try something new. Leaders of social change must have determination because they will have to do things in life. It is important to recognize that we will all have things we don’t want to do in life but we have to do it.
