Sophia S - Resilience
Being resilient is the ability to recover from or adjust to misfortune or change. I think that this quality is about how you don’t give up when something bad has happened to you, or you had something big change in your life. I think that this quality is a really important characteristic in your personality because, that shows how determined you are and, how brave you are. Jackie Robinson showed resilience and so do I.
Jackie Robinson showed resilience and this is why. “Promises to Keep” by Sharon Robinson pg 34, Jackie Robinson shows resilience by getting through those hard times. A Syracuse player threw a black cat at Jackie and said “Hey Jackie, there’s your cousin fooling around on the field.” Jackie was resilient because he was called horrible names, and he got a cat thrown at him, but because of that anger that he was feeling he hit for a double. “there were letters and calls threatening violence and boycott if my father appeared on the field.” Even though people threatened him and bullied him, he never gave up and he used that emotion to play baseball. He also was very self controlled. Jackie Robinson never gave up and his family helped him to not listen to those letters and calls. He always was self controlled. The fact that he was a colored person as well, told people that you should never give up just because the color of your skin.
I see resilience as my factor of success because my jeep burnt down, and I was in the middle of it. It was very scary. I couldn’t get the fact that my jeep burnt down, and then we found out that my great grandma had brain cancer, and my childhood dog had pneumonia. I soon found out that I would never be able to see them again. I fought through that and I never gave up. My family, and many others inspire me and I needed this quality in my life because I have been through sad times, but even though I was going through that challenge I never gave up. I am trying to give the message that you can’t let the anger or sadness get the best of you even though you can’t handle those emotions. You can’t just give up because you have lost someone or you are going through hard times.
While creating my yard sign for the 5th grade Campaign of Leadership, I had to make several design choices. I chose the “Black Ops One” and “New Rocker” fonts because, to be resilient, you have to be strong and determined, and those fonts makes me feel like its a strong bold font. I also like the fonts. I chose the black and dark grey colors because I feel that it reminds me of rocks and, usually you are going through obstacles and you have to fight through them. I changed the color of every other letter and made it grey because, I felt like that was the same colors as the rocks.
Resilient, the ability to recover from or adjust to misfortune or change. I think that this quality is important because it means that you are strong enough and determined enough to get through the pain that you are feeling and all that emotion. This quality relates to Jackie Robinson because he was called really bad names, he was threatened, and he was bullied really badly, but he got through that, he kept playing, and he never listened to those voices and letters. It matters because Jackie changed peoples minds about colored people, and he got in the hall of fame because he didn’t give up and he played really good from all that anger and won multiple games.
