Guts is an important characteristic for people who lead social change. Guts means to use determination and fortitude. If people want to say what they believe in, or stand up for what they believe in, they have to use guts if they are scared. Guts means taking a risk and doing something that you’re scared to do. Jackie Robinson used guts when he gave his speech, “This I Believe,” and I used guts when I spoke in front of my kindergarten class before I knew anybody. Guts helps both Jackie Robinson and me change our world and make it better.

Jackie Robinson changed the world by making it okay for people of color to be able to play in major league baseball. Jackie Robinson used guts when he played baseball and when the audience said bad things about him, he ignored those people. Jackie Robinson also used guts when he gave his speech “This I Believe” because he was scared people would hate him more and he used a lot of guts to share his ideas. In “This I Believe” by Jackie Robinson, he says “My fight was against the barriers that kept Negroes out of baseball.” This shows guts because he spoke up even if a lot of people didn’t care or disagreed.

Guts means taking a risk to do something that you’re scared to do, or something that you stand up for. Having guts helps me be able to do my passage. Guts allows me to express myself to my friends if a teammate is not fair in basketball. Jackie Robinson and I used guts when we both said something we were afraid to say. I used guts when I came to my new Colorado school in kindergarten from Mexico. I was scared because I did not know English, so I had one of my friends help me so I could introduce myself. Afterwards, I was glad I did it, but I was still kind of nervous. I can use guts to be a leader of social change by helping other immigrants in my community feel welcome, too.

I chose Permanent Marker because when because it is like it is never is going to come off, it is always going to be there. I choose black because before I was born my mom and my dad divorced and then I choose a red shadow because it is my favorite color and it reminds me about my dad’s red truck. My mom and my dad were riding together with me in the truck when we were moving to Colorado.

Jackie and I changed the world by using guts. We used guts when we said something we were scared to say. Leaders of social change should have guts because if they want to do or say something that people don’t like, guts will help them say it. This is important because you must stand up for something you believe in, like I did and like Jackie Robinson did.
