Totally looks like me!
My name is Youssef Daoud. I am a junior at Old Dominion University, majoring in History with licensure to teach social studies at a secondary level. I always liked social studies throughout my life. In school, my favorite courses were geography, history and government! Teaching always interested me as a profession, and I would like to teach something I love to the next generation, as well as impart good civic values in young Americans. I don't just want to teach, I want to make an impact. My past experiences shaped me into who I am today. Particularly in my high school years, I went through a lot of hardship and trouble. As a teacher, I want to impact children so that they do not make the same mistakes I did in my formative years. Other experiences that pushed me towards teaching was simply having amazing teachers in school who I admired and look at as a model teacher. I would like to be a teacher that students love, one they will remember, and a teacher that helps students onto the right path and shapes young minds!
What I already Know
What I Need to Learn
Classroom management and discipline. I can't let the students walk all over me. I need to learn how to gain their attention and respect without being mean. I believe consistency is key in this regard.
How to properly form lesson plans. I need to learn to how to form well flowing and engaging lesson plans to captivate my students.
Dealing with special needs students. I have no idea how to interact with special needs people properly, and would need to learn how to do so as a teacher.
Effective time management in the classroom. I struggle with time management now, and as a teacher I would need to have great time management skills in order to move at the required pace.
Patience. Being a teacher, especially a new teacher, requires a lot of patience, because it is grueling. This is something that will come with time.
I want to challenge myself
The Teacher I Will Become
I want to become a social studies teacher. I believe the purpose of school is to prepare students with a baseline education no matter which path they take, and a sense of responsibility. I think the most important thing my students will learn is how their government works, civic responsibility, and the knowledge to be a more informed citizen and prepare them to make their own choices and decisions rather than be influenced by others. My students will learn through more interactive and engaging material, rather than just reading from a book. I want to facilitate discussion in the classroom, and create an environment where students are not afraid to state their beliefs and debate, in a respectful manner. I think taking in multiple viewpoints is an excellent way to learn about our contemporary society. My students will value each other's perspective and use them to help each other learn by interacting with each other and having discussions. My teaching philosophy would best be described as progressivist. If someone walked into my classroom, they would see many students interacting with each other and back-and-forth discussion between me and the students. My students would best be described as excited and engaged.
