Hello. My name is Rebecca Shupe. I am an older student at the age of 37. My major is Elementary Education. I live in Virginia with my husband and 5 kids. I also have 2 cats and a dog. My house is usually full of noise and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
My all time favorite hobby is watching my children do what they love, such as softball, football, volleyball, ect.
I also enjoy getting to have family nights. We might go out to dinner, curl up on the couch and watch a movie together, or play a board game.
Though I love my family, I sometimes just enjoy cuddling in the bed alone and watching a good movie.
My influences were the good teachers and the bad teachers. They both showed me how their attitudes could impact a students life. It makes me want to work hard and send each student home feeling like they could achieve anything they put their minds to.
I earned my Child Care Certificate while in high school. The first year, we ran a preschool in our classroom. I got to preform the every day duties of a preschool teacher. In the second year we got to go into our local Kindergarten classrooms and intern.
For the past two years, I have been teaching ESL online to children in China.
Right off the bat, I adore the fact that you are continuously learning, education should never end. All of your jobs you have had are amazing, and you seem so well-rounded! Your influence section is interesting and admirable because having bad teachers was influential to you and I think that's such a positive way to look at the past. I too love a noisy home, it is comforting. -Keegan (Kiki) Riggs
I can already tell that the way you love your children and their passions will translate into the kind of teacher you will be! I love the way that you want to treat your students as equals, and know that the way to receive respect is to give it. I agree with your perspectives on how school should work, too! I think kids should obviously be taught the basics and what they need to succeed in the world, but it's important to nurture both their minds and their hearts! ~Reicse Owen
5 kids! Wow! The way you write, you seem like such a loving mother and seem to really appreciate the simple things in life. I think carrying that attitude into your teaching will bring on great things for you. I think your comment on "what you need to learn" which says that things will not always go as planned is incredibly important to recognize. I think this career will always keep us on our toes, so we should prepare for it now. - Kayla Weekley
I completely agreee with your philosphy of what the purpose of school is! kids will defenitely not retain every single thing that is taught to them but as long as they learn something new everyday then I know that I am doing my job! I also agree with your statement that "not everything will go as planned" specially when it comes to teaching younger kids, it is hard for things to go as planned! Great job! - Reaven Caceres
I loved that you mentioned that you were influenced by both the bad and good teachers in your life. I know that sometimes I can rest easier remembering the good ones, but the bad ones will always be the ones that really drive me because I don't want to be like them. I want to be a teacher that welcomes EVERYONE, and from what I can see of you, I can tell that you want the same. - Arielle Nelson
I also mentioned time management in my page! I think this is a great point. I often question myself: will I be ready to be a teacher in a few years from now? At the moment, my time management skills as abysmal. This is something I need to work on over time, or else it may affect my professional career. I also believe in a more student centered classroom. I want my students to interact with each other, and ask a lot of questions to assess each others viewpoints and learn from each other! I really enjoyed reading your page. -Youssef Daoud
Hi Rebecca! I agree with everything one what I need to learn. I am completely horrible at time management. I definitely need to work on that now before it's too late. Being flexible is also important. I get anxiety when things don't go how I planned but I know that is how life is. So i have to work on that too. - Jasmine Rodwell
