Who I am
My name is Geneia Sweeting and I am from Glen Allen, Virginia. Growing up, I wanted to be a pediatrician but once I became a cheer coach my senior year of college that all changed. Being that I am a young black female, it was embedded in me to go to college and get a degree to have a good job. Which I believe still applies. Even in my everyday life, I apply this concept.
My Knowledge
Growing up I didn't have many relationships with my teachers. Which made me feel like they were unrelatable. Coming into my senior year, a bond had started with one of my teachers and we clicked. I think having relationships with your students is important. This will allow you to understand who they are and help when creating lessons.
A piece of my brain
I also believe that with time comes experience and being a teacher will definitely help with that. When we first start our jobs take a deep breath and use what we know but also be open to using others' ideas and adding your twist. This will benefit both students and you. Which will allow you to push your students and grow with them as well.
What I have to learn
To be an effective teacher, I need to learn how to be a diverse teacher. I want to be able to include students' backgrounds and what makes them who they are in my classroom. I will ask my; peers for help and advice to equip myself. I want effective feedback from both my students and boss to improve my teaching skills.
Geneia in the future
I want my classroom to be an engaging environment. This will look like students using technology, learning in different environments, and more. I think it is important to incorporate different ways of learning inside of the classroom. I don't believe direct instruction is the best way to teach students. I believe they have to be included in their learning by acting hands-on, using critical thinking, and learning by including their likes.
In my opinion, I think that the purpose of school is to equip you with the tools needed to be independent in the real world. In order for my students to be successful inside the school, I need to provide tools to do so. The two most important thing I want my students to learn coming out of my classroom is to ask for help and to always try something. In my classroom, I want to stress to students that relationships are keys to success in my classroom. The most important relationships they should have are with themselves and following their teacher and their peers.
Students will be interacting by group projects, classwork, and discussions in class. I want students to feel comfortable with working with themselves and each other because that is how the real world is. My job is to prepare them for their next steps in life and teaching effective communication and working in teams is two tools that are used.
One of the five philosophies I believe best describes my classroom is progressivism. A word that best describes my teaching is engaging. One word that best describes my students' eagerness, because I want them to feel ready to learn because of all the exciting activities that we will be doing when learning.
