My name is Alandra Reed, but I go by Lani. I am a senior at Old Dominion University seeking a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. I am currently a first grade exceptional education teacher at Westover Hills Elementary School. Although, I was born in raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, but I fell in love with the south and found a home here in Richmond.
Being an educator requires you to wear many hats. You have to nurture your students, teach your students, and push your students to their potential. To be all these things is a difficult job and sometimes you may have to pour the last of yourself out to fill your students up with whatever they need. I know that this is a sacrifice I am willing to make each and everyday as I pursue my career in education.
I need to learn new strategies for teaching my students reading in writing. I know a lot of tricks and tips when teaching math, but I cant say the same for ELA
I need to learn how to incorporate more creative lessons into my day. I tend to revert back to traditional ways of teaching when I'm unsure of what to do. I would love to be able to come up with more activities that I created on my own
I need to learn to be more confident in my teaching capabilities. I love what I do and I should be confident!
I need to be more patient with my students. I am teaching first grade this year, so my students never had a real Kindergarten year due to the pandemic. I cannot expect them to be the same as first graders that I have had in the past.
I need to learn how to handle chaos. Sometimes too much chaos brings the worst out of me.
I need to be more consistent. Sometimes, I let my students get away with things that go against our community or classroom rules. I need to be more consistent with upholding those standards.
I will become the best educator I can be! All of the things I explained that I needed in the previous section are also goals I hope to achieve. When I am able to become that educator, I feel as though I will be top-tier! I want to be the teacher that students look back on life and realize made a big impact on them. Whether they learned a new skill from me or just remember being loved by me, I hope I become the teacher who made a difference!
Hi Lani! I like how you said that you needed to learn how to control the "chaos" I fond that to be true in every aspect of life. I may need to find out what some of those tricks for teaching math you speak of. :). I admire you goals for becoming the best teacher that you can be. I have the confidence that you will obtain those goals. - Mandy Duff
Hey Alandra, for starters I love your name and your page is well constructed! I think it's great that you're already getting some experience in your field. It seems that you've already learned a lot aftering reading your "What I Know" section, which had a lot of great points! Great work and I wish your the best senior year!! -Kayla Chambers
Hello I sympathize with your phrase "control the chaos!" I too find myself overwhelmed sometimes and I find it comforting I'm not the only one going through that! I admire your confidence in becoming the best teacher you can be "Gambatte!" It means "lets do our best! in Japanese. School children and teachers there can be heard saying this phrase to cheer each other on!- Patricia S
Hello Alandra, I like your point on confidence! Confidence is key, or else the children will walk all over you if you look meek. Personally this is also a worry for me; I don't want to get bullied by my students! Also your dog is so cute! -Youssef Daoud
