Listen to some music with me! :)
Who am I?
World renowned super star? First class chef? Super hero? Nope. I'm Carolyn Chin. I am considered a senior per ODU's description of me, but I always feel like a brand new students trying to learn new different things. I am working towards my BA in Elementary Education K - 6. As an Asian American, there have been many times I have felt excluded from activities in school, ignored by teachers, treated differently by my own peers. What helped me realized not all teachers were bad was the care from the few teachers that did and it impacted me in a larger way that I expected. They influenced myself to be that teacher for students like I was who needed someone who cared and showed that they did.
A little about me!
I wanted to include a little about myself and what I love doing outside of hiding in a room reading three textbooks. I play video games, watch anime, read poetry, and cook & bake a lot on my free time if possible I've currently been into the show "What if?" on Disney + and I'm obsessed. I also create art as it's a great way to help keep my mind active and open throughout my personal life. I also believe art and creativity should be a good practice for students to help have some sort of outlet outside of essays and textbooks!
What I know?
As someone who is an Asian American as stated before, I have learned what inclusion truly is and what it means for a student. I like to believe I have an open mind about the different things that make people unique as I have friends and family who are part of the LGBTQ community. I believe having an open mind and showing kindness will help show my future students and fellow classmates/future coworkers that we can help make a kind world where people can feel accepted and safe. I want to help students also achieve critical thinking skills that can help better their future and help make decisions based on whatever they are dealing with in school and out.
What I have to learn?
Based on the multiple classes I have taken during my journey to be a teacher, there are many teaching attributes to learn to help understand future student's needs and help their development. I want to learn more about differentiation and being able to adapt my future lesson plans. As in my about me, I am a creative person in nature, so I want to learn different creative ways through differentiation how to make lesson plans more interesting and creative which will hopefully help excite my future students and help them grow academically and creatively. One last thing is being able to continue collaboration for my own growth. I am a naturally shy person outside of a screen and would love to communicate more with peers and future coworkers to learn from them and grow with their knowledge and experience as teachers. I have started that journey with my boyfriend's mother who is a teacher and will continue to strive forward gaining knowledge.
The Teacher I will become
Please pause the music above if you played it while reading. :)
Video Dialogue: Hello! Today, I will talk about the teacher I will become in the future. I'll start with my personal teaching philosophies I believe which are progressivism and social reconstructivism. Having students learn problem solving skills help their critical thinking skills and collaborative skills with their fellow peers. I also believe that introducing differentiation in society can help students be open minded and kind to one another. I want to be a teacher that is inclusive and kind to all my students so they know they feel safe and understood. I also want to try and be creative in the room with different ways students can interact in the class and in their work. This helps their minds stay active and hopefully attentive to retain anything I teach. Overall, I want to be a kind teacher that gives them a safe space for students to be themselves. Thank you for watching!
My Philosophy: I personally believe in Progressivism and Social Reconstructivism as I believe in critical thinking individually and together as groups that have students thinking about issues and the solutions that can help fix the issues. Social Reconstructivism is a part of my personal philosophy as a future open minded teacher, I want to help influence my students to be open minded to inequities and biases around them.
