Who I am:
An Empath
A Dancer
A Lover of animals & people
A Future Educator
A Yogi
An Adventurer
A Traveler
Hello! My name is Keegan Riggs and I am a Richmond, VA native! My family and close friends call me Kiki. My family is my world. I am in the middle of two brothers and I have a lot of non-blood family. I have known I was born to be a teacher since I was a small kid playing 'classroom' with my friends. Outside of Education, my heart is in the performing arts world, especially dance. I am a baby yogi, and love to be outside. I am a very sensitive being, curious about humans and animals and how they feel. I have a serious case of the travel bug and cannot wait to see the world.
One of my biggest teaching inspirations is this quote by Craig Kielburger.
Instagram: @KimothyJoy
Using Adaptability in the learning environment, I know that different children have different needs
I have been training and working with Special Education classrooms for 5 years, I specifically work with students on the Autism spectrum. It is the most fulfilling work imaginable
Sign Language! It can be handy it the classroom
Teaching is more than academic knowledge, I know how to teach young students how to take care of one another, and to be kind
How to read a story and keep attention, it includes lots of silly voices
How to fix a boo boo
How to make schedules and plan, plan, plan (even though things never quite go according to plan)
How to make cute bulletin boards
How to create a positive atmosphere for mistakes
What I have to learn:
Technology- Technology does not come easily for me. Creating interactive tools with ease is a goal for me.
Boundaries- I must learn to create healthy boundaries for myself so I do not burn out or overwhelm myself. I need to learn how to care for my students without taking all their problems unto myself.
Math- Better methods for teaching math is a MUST, I need to learn ways to make math make sense for younger children.
Firmness- I need to learn how to know how to put my foot down when needed, I can be a push-over sometimes.
Ease- I need to learn how to carry on with ease and not expect everything to go smoothly.
Focus- I need to learn how to reign in tangent tendency and stay on track.
My favorite of many TED Talks, I feel that this teacher has similar teaching philosophies as I do.
The Teacher I will become:
I will become my students' biggest cheerleader. I will be a passionate and nurturing teacher that young students can trust. I will create a safe space for healthy self-expression and positive reinforcement. I will become a teacher who creates hands-on, out of the box lessons so that students can learn to love the world around them. I will be an encourager of curiosity and questions. I plan to teach upper elementary and will embrace neurodiverse classrooms. I will build a sense of community and teach compassion. World Peace begins in the classroom.

I really enjoy all your backgrounds for each of the sections. I'm also very familiar with Richmond, Virginia my hometown is about an hour away from there. The youtube video you uploading on "how every kid needs a champion" it's a very inspiring video. - Megan Belden
Keegan, it was really nice getting to know you through your Authors page. Finding out that technology does not come as easily to someone else really made me feel better because, that too is something I need to work on as a future teacher. One of my biggest goals as a teacher, is too, to create a community within my classroom. Good luck with all of your future teaching endeavors! - Kearsten Rice
Your author page was very nice and creative. I noticed that you were an empath, and I think that is great, as when you are a teacher, I am sure that the more empathy you have, the better of a teacher you will be. I also have the goal of become a cheerleader or supporter to my students, and want to work towards that. Good luck on your teaching journey. - Kellie Wiltrout
Hey Kiki, for starters your author page is super cute! I love the picture of you and the goat! You seem very passionate about your future career path, which is very important when becoming a teacher. I can relate to just about all the information you have on you page, we're even from the same hometown. The TED Talk video was a great touch and very informative. Great work and good luck this semester!! -Kayla Chambers
Hi Kiki! I really enjoyed your author page! I was really drawn to both of your "What I know" lists. I like how you introduce the kinds of things you know outside of the major-related things before you get into the things you know about the classroom. I also really love the video that you included! It's one of my favorites as well after having watched it in a different class. I get a vibe from you that a lot of my favorite teachers used to have so I hope you can do for other kids what they've done for me! Great work on the page again! - Jared Gibson
