Little baby me in my first passport. In this photo I was about a year old.
Who am I: I have been and will always be a Gypsy. I have travelled since before I even had memory. As a baby I would make frequent trips to Guatemala to the United states. I was born in California and left the state at 15 with dreams of seeing the world. I accomplished those dreams and for years wanderlust carried me from place to place. I never stayed long and was as transient as the wind. In my travels I came to appreciate language as an essential part of travel and fell in love with the study of language. I am currently majoring in Spanish. Through my time wandering I have come to appreciate how much of an impact language can make in peoples lives and how everyone is a vital part in this fabric of our shared humanity. I wish to teach those who dream to travel elsewhere and give them the means to begin a conduit among the people they meet.
My family resides in Guatemala City. I will inherit a small pink house from my mother and 120 acres of land there.
Me with a monk I met at the temple. This was in Kanagawa, Japan
Climbed Mt Fuji
What I know: I know that there are so many ways to see the moon! Let me explain. Despite the fact we all can view the moon in the sky people have varying points of views. Each with its own legend and story to tell. People are connected through stories and language. We all share the basic need to connect with our peers and seek connection through language. Language is the catalyst to thought. To be able to teach those who may not come from your place of birth or culture you can always seek connection through a shared love of food, pop culture, sports, anything to motivate interaction! You would be shocked how eager people are to speak to you and engage when you bring up something that interests them! To better yourself you do not need to to wander long just wander once. You will never forget the experience. Just leaving to another state or even another city can be very eye-opening and help expand your view of the world.
The various images pertaining to what is shown on the moon is an example of the different ways people and cultures view the world around them.
A view from the top of the mountain. I touched the clouds and watched as they floated by. Glad I don't smoke the air is so thin up there!
What I have left to learn: How to present material in a structured manner. I must pull my head out of those clouds and start thinking methodically. Language is structured with very defined rules in syntax ,dialect and speech. I will set daily goals for myself. Scaffolding minor accomplishments towards a large project. To have a clear goal in mind when I create lesson plans.
Moving around at 40 weeks. This was in a temple located in one of the many islands around Japan. Looking back it was a reckless thing to do! Glad I didn't POP!
In Japan pilgrims are seen dressed in white attire as a rite of purification. They recite prayers and beg for alms provided generously by the public.
Sumo match with a 3 month old! She enjoyed it! For the longest time my daughter was my only company while I wandered all over Japan.
Baby in tow. It was off to the temple! I hiked quite a ways to get that arrow only to have baby Diana make it her teething toy!
The teacher I will become: I will be an enthusiastic, empathetic instructor. The purpose of school is not the pursuit of just academic goals. But to provide a meaningful experience to students seeking to better themselves and their view of the world. The most important things my students will learn is that the education they seek will open doors to them not just in their personal lives but in a global scale. Through exposure and interaction in a different language will my students learn and understand a different way of thinking and communicating in the world. To know Spanish allows you familiarity to many other romance languages. They will be able to enjoy a greater range of media. I will introduce stories and legends told in Latin America as well as historical accounts told by merchants and traders, such as the Portuguese. Who's impact in Japanese history cannot be overstated. They wrote of their experiences with the East and Japan. Their influence effects Japanese culture even today. This is an example of how the world is interconnected. My students will value the access the knowledge of another language affords them. In this sense I am lean more to an essentialist philosophy in education as language is what allows students to better understand and appreciate a foreign culture. It is essential in obtaining the life skills needed to pursue opportunities overseas if they so wished. The vastness of the world cannot be overstated nor can the value of experience.
