My name is Shane Gallagher and I grew up in Haymarket, VA. I am the oldest of three siblings, my sister Catie is 18 and my brother Collin is 14. My family is very close knit and we have always gotten along. In my free time I can usually be found with friends or reading a book, usually Stephen King. As well as teaching I have a passion for singing and have even been in the top choir in VA before! I also have a love for sailing and anything to do with the ocean.
I found my passion for teaching in middle school through a fantastic teacher as well as through Boy Scouts, however I was pushed to join the military by my parents. In 2019 I started college at East Carolina University and was a part of the Air Force ROTC unit with a plan to become a fighter pilot. After one semester I not only found it wasn't for me, but I also noticed I was falling behind in other classes due to the amount of time I spent in ROTC. I dropped the program and went back to the drawing board, ultimately finding my love for teaching again through a summer camp I worked at.
I hope that in the near future, I can be described as an engaging teacher. If a visitor were to walk into my classroom I would want them to see a teacher that is excited about the material he is teaching and is getting the students engaged with each other about it. I would also want them to see me treating my students with respect. One of the things that always annoyed me as a student was being treated like I was less than the teacher because I wasn't an adult, and I hope to change that in my classroom. I also plan on teaching my students how to respect each other, as well as teaching them to be more confident in themselves. Whether it be through presentations or writing projects, I hope to only point out the things a student has done well and boost their confidence for projects in the future and for other classes.
