How do you find the area of a rectangle?
How do you find the area of a square?
How do you find the area of a triangle?
How about a circle?
Area is the size of a surface. Or, you could say area is the amount of space you'd need to cover with paint if you were painting a surface.
Like volume, you find the area of a figure by using a formula, which is different for each type of figure.
The formula for the area of a rectangle is:
A = L x W
The formula for the area of a triangle is:
A = ½ B x H
Be careful: the height is always perpendicular to the base (and it's necessarily a side).
The formula for the area of a circle is:
A = πr^2
Be careful: the radius (r) is the distance half way across the circle, not the whole way (which is called diameter).
